Carbuncle (Yong, a type of suppurative skin disease) arises from cold pathogens clashing with blood. The blood becomes stagnant and obstructed, allowing heat to gather and accumulate at the site, forming a congestion. Because the heat qi cannot be vented outward, it internally steams the five zang organs, resulting in restlessness (Fan, mental agitation) and thirst (Ke). In cases of carbuncle swelling accompanied by heat and thirst, the patient will drink water excessively. If cold drinks enter the stomach and intestines, it may transform into diarrhea (Xiali); it may also transform into vomiting or hiccups (Yue). The reason for this is that the root cause lies in deficient heat and rebellious qi; thus, cold qi takes advantage of the deficiency, leading to vomiting, hiccups, cold extremities, and diarrhea.
