The condition of deficiency-heat following the onset of a carbuncle (furuncle) arises from cold pathogens invading the meridians, causing stagnation and obstruction of Qi and blood, which then condenses into swelling and forms a carbuncle. When heat qi becomes congested and knotted, blood transforms into pus. After the pus has ruptured and the wound has initially healed, residual heat remains未尽 (not yet cleared), while Qi and blood have become deficient. The patient suffers from intermittent fever and weakness, hence it is termed "deficiency-heat."
Formulas:
Shudihuang San (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats carbuncles after onset, where pus continues to drain incessantly, accompanied by deficiency-heat in the skin and limbs, dry mouth, and poor appetite.
Ingredients: Shu Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), each 1 liang; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 0.5 liang; Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, radix removed); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 2 liang; Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), each 0.5 liang; Baifuling (Poria), 1 liang; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw), 0.5 liang.
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, filter out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
Huangqi San (Astragali Radix Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats carbuncles where pus drains for several days without stopping, leading to bodily deficiency, vexatious heat, dizziness, and mental cloudiness.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, radix removed), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Lingyangjiaoxie (Antelopi Cornu, shaved), each 1 liang; Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), 3 fen; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 0.5 fen; Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, radix removed); Digupi (Lycii Cortex), 0.5 liang; Baifuling (Poria), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), each 1 liang.
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, filter out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
Chenxiang San (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats carbuncles where pus drainage has ceased, but internal muscle deficiency persists with lingering residual heat.
Ingredients: Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 1 liang, sliced), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw sliced), each 0.5 liang; Shu Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), 2 liang; Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 liang, radix removed); Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), 0.5 liang; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), 3 fen; Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed); Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang, sliced).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, include 14 leaves of Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) and 50 grains of Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus), decoct until reduced to 6 fen, filter out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
Renshen San (Ginseng Radix Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats carbuncle sores where excessive purulent discharge leads to internal deficiency-heat.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, radix removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), 3 fen; Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed); Digupi (Lycii Cortex), 0.5 liang; Shu Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced), Baifuling (Poria), each 1 liang; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw sliced), 0.5 liang.
