When treating sudden onset of intense heat that is about to form an abscess (Yongzhong, a type of soft tissue infection), the topical medications applied initially must address the fierce and overwhelming heat intensity. If the swollen area has developed a head (indicating pus formation), warm-acting plasters should be applied to draw out the heat-toxin. This follows the principle of "fire tending towards dryness." For the surrounding erythematous areas, crushed cold-natured herbs should be applied to subdue and suppress the heat, analogous to extinguishing fire or driving away evil influences. Raw cold herbs possess potent and complete qi-force, with robust and pungent properties. Historically, practitioners often failed to consider the natural physical properties of herbs, instead using common herbal pastes that had been processed with oil. Such oil-refined preparations have significantly diminished efficacy. It is difficult for such weak forces to counteract aggressive pathogens. The term "Chen Yong" (deep-seated abscess) refers to obstruction and stagnation; the key treatment lies in unblocking. Applying sticky plasters at the initial stage would prevent the dispersion of stagnant Qi, making it impossible to resolve the condition without suppuration. However, if the heat is not severe or has already subsided, one may freely apply plasters to seek recovery. When applying topical treatments for swelling: for patients with thick skin, use old soft cloth or paper flowers coated with medicine; replace when dry. For patients with thin skin, use fine gauze or thin paper coated with medicine; replace before it dries. Various formulas follow.
