Human muscles and skin rely on Qi and Blood for warming and nourishment. When a carbuncle (Yong, 痈) persists without healing, it is because the heat-toxin has not been fully cleared. Wind-cold pathogens take advantage of this weakness to invade and lodge in the wound aperture. The muscles fail to receive warmth, resulting in swelling and induration that do not dissipate. The condition fluctuates between remission and exacerbation, a syndrome termed "Chronic Carbuncle" (Jiu Yong, 久痈). If left untreated, it may transform into a fistula (Lou, 瘘).
