When cold qi prevails, it is termed Painful Bi (Tongbi, a type of bi syndrome characterized by severe pain). When the flow of qi should be unobstructed but becomes blocked, pain ensues. The presence of pain in Bi syndrome arises because cold qi invades the meridians and collaterals, causing blood and qi to move sluggishly, stagnate, and fail to circulate freely.
