The Lung governs the skin and hair. The Kidney governs water metabolism. When Lung Qi is deficient, water flows recklessly and overflows into the skin. Consequently, the body and face become completely swollen, and pressing on it leaves an indentation that does not immediately recover.
Sangganpi San (Mulberry Root Bark Powder): Specifically treats Pi Shui (Skin Water/Edema). Symptoms include swelling of the head, face, and four limbs; palpitations; difficulty in breathing; panting and distress; and obstructed urination and defecation.
Ingredients: Sanggenbaipi (Morus Albae Cortex, 1 liang, crushed and stir-fried); Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 1 liang, peeled, tips removed, twin kernels removed, stir-fried); Chenjuapi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Vetus, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, white pith removed); Gansui (Kansui Radix, 1 liang, baked until slightly yellow); Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 1 liang); Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Hosta Root, 2 liang); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang); Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen Rubrum, 1 sheng, boiled with 5 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng of juice).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Decoct with one zhongzhan of the red bean juice until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and remove dregs. Take warm at Wugeng chu (early morning, around 3-5 AM). After walking the distance of ten li, diuresis should occur. If not, take another dose.
Hanfangji San (Stephania Tetrandra Powder): Specifically treats Pi Shui. Symptoms include swelling as if wrapped in water within the skin, and a tingling or twitching sensation in the four limbs.
Ingredients: Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang); Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix, 1 liang, crushed); Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 liang); Chifuling (Poria Cocos with Red Hosta Root, 2 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, honey-fried and crushed); Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, 1 liang *[Note: Original text truncated here, inferred dosage based on standard formula]*).
Muxiang Wan (Costus Pill): Specifically treats Pi Shui. Symptoms include complete swelling of the body and face.
Ingredients: Muxiang (Costi Radix, 1 fen); Ruxiang (Olibanum, 1 fen); Zhusha (Cinnabar, 0.5 qian, ground); Gansui (Kansui Radix, 0.5 qian, stir-fried until slightly yellow); Binglang (Arecae Semen, 2 pieces, one raw, one roasted/cooked); Kuhuuluizi (Benincasae Fructus Semen, 1 fen, stir-fried).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with well-cooked rice paste to form 40 pills. Wrap each pill in dough. Boil in a pot (diao) with water until cooked. The patient swallows the pills with the decoction until finished. From morning until Wu Shi (noon), the water will be discharged downward. Stop taking the medicine when the water is exhausted, regardless of the number of bowel movements.
Jiawei Yebipro Tang (Modified Yebipro Decoction): Specifically treats Pi Shui.
Mufangji Tang (Stephania and Astragalus Decoction): Treats Pi Shui. Symptoms resemble qi swelling trapped in the skin, with aggregating tremors in the four limbs.
Ingredients: Mufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 3 liang); Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix, 3 liang); Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 liang); Fuling (Poria Cocos, 6 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried).
Usage: Cut the herbs. Decoct with 6 sheng of water.
Wupi San (Five Peel Powder): Specifically treats Pi Shui. Symptoms include complete swelling of the four limbs and head/face, leaving indentations upon pressure; abdomen distended like a drum; no panting or thirst; floating pulse; and distension of the heart and abdomen.
Ingredients: Dafupi (Tangerine Fruit Wall / Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium - specifically the large belly peel); Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex); Fulingpi (Poria Cocos Sclerotium Peel); Shengjiangpi (Zingiberis Recensis Cortex); Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium).
Usage: Crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Decoct with two zhan of water until reduced to 7 fen. Strain and take hot. Take 2-3 times daily. It is better to decoct with ground Muxiang water. If constipation occurs, add equal parts of Wujiu Genpi (Stafford Weed Root Bark) for decoction; this is extremely effective.
Commentary: The Ju Fang (Official Formulary) version of Wupi San uses Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) and Digupi (Lycii Cortex). This formula originates from *Zhongzang Jing*, using Chenpi and Sangbaipi, which benefit the Spleen and Lung, hence its frequent efficacy. Some add Fuzi Pi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Peel), which is also reasonable. For obstruction of both urination and defecation, add equal parts of Wujiu Genpi, and adding Luobo Gen (Radish Root) is particularly excellent. For difficult urination, add Zhulingpi (Polypori Umbellati Sclerotium Peel). Another prescription adds Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), mixed with Chenxiang water. This medicine has saved many lives. I once saw an old woman in Jiangshi suffering from edema who was cured by this medicine. Nü Baoxian suffered from the same disease but had a deep and fine pulse; this formula added with Fuzi Pi and Fuyuan Dan was effective. Another person had abdominal swelling and discomfort in the lower jiao, combined with chronic leukorrhea and frequent loose stools, causing swelling due to water stagnation; adding Zhulingpi to the previous formula was also effective. Do not neglect this. *San Yin Fang* adds... [Text Truncated]
Another Prescription: Take cow urine, Shanglu mutton, and Xiangfu decoction, etc., see the "Swelling and Fullness" section. The large formulas such as Qianshui Wan are in other volumes. If it is only the skin and small abdomen... [Text Truncated]
