For those suffering from stabbing pain in the ear, it is all due to wind pathogen invading the Kidney meridian. If left untreated, the pathogen may flow into the Kidney, causing sudden stiffness of the spine and straightening of the back. If swelling occurs due to pain, and the qi mechanism is unobstructed, then use Shengxi Wan (Calf Horn Pill) [from *Shengji Zonglu*] to treat stabbing pain in the ear.
Rhinoceros Horn (sliced into flakes), 1 liang; Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 牛黄), 1 liang; Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), half liang; Typhonii Rhizoma Praeparatum (Baifuzi, 白附子); Elap Carinatus (Wushe, 乌梢蛇), soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, roasted; Arisaema Cum Bile (Tiannanxing, 天南星), sliced and processed; Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, 桂心), bark removed. The above herbs are pounded into fine powder, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of a wutong seed. Take 20 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with wine.
Xiaodu Gao (Disinfecting Ointment): Treats various ear diseases where pain is unbearable.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 大黄), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren, 栀子仁), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) [prepared separately as powder], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) [each 3 liang], Paeoniae Radix Rubra/Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药) [2 liang]. Simmer the herbs slowly over low heat to make an ointment.
Shaoyao San (Paeonia Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats heat accumulation generating wind, causing ear pain radiating to the head, with discharge of pus and blood.
Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, 白芍药), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 大黄), Momordicae Semen (Mubiezi, 木鳖子) [each half liang]. Coarsely crush the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct in water, take after meals, and again before bedtime.
Xiangfu Gao (Cyperi Ointment) [from *Shengji Zonglu*]: Treats ear pain.
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) [2 pieces, skin and navel removed, used raw], Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu, 菖蒲), Alumen (Fanshi, 矾石) [burnt until dry], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed, double-kernel ones stir-fried, each half liang], Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) [ground, 2 fen]. Pound the above herbs into an ointment.

Grind the above herbs into fine powder and insufflate into the ear.

Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [3 qian]; Costi Radix (Muxiang, 木香) [half qian]; Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗) [1 qian]; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [1 qian]. Prepare as one dose, decoct in water, strain, and drink.
Another prescription for treating inner ear pain:
Manis Pentadactyla (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲) [1 or 2 scales]; Gryllus (Tougouzi, 土狗子) [2 insects]. First, sandwich the Gryllus between the Manis scales and stir-fry together until scorched yellow. Add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), grind finely, and insufflate into the ear.
Another prescription [from *Haishang Fang*]:
Shape Saponis Radix (Caowu, 草乌) like a date pit, dip it in fresh ginger juice, and insert it into the ear. The pain will stop immediately. Another version does not use ginger juice.
Another prescription [from *Ren Cun Fang*]:
Use blood from Crucian Carp (Jiyu, 鲫鱼). Drip a few drops into the ear to cure.
Baiyan Fang (White Salt Prescription) [from *Wei Shi Fang*]: Treats deafness accompanied by pain.
Baihe San (Lily Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats deafness accompanied by pain.
Use Bulbus Lilii (Baihe, 百合) in any quantity, bake until dry, and grind into a fine powder. After meals, mix with warm water and take 1 qian-bi (a measure shaped like a ginseng slice). Taking it three times a day is optimal.
Prescription for treating extreme inner ear pain [from *Shengji Zonglu*]:
Use Curcumae Radix (Yujin, 郁金) powder, ground finely. For each dose, take an amount equivalent to "one character" (approx. 0.5-1g), mix with clean water, pour into the ear, and then quickly tilt it out.

Stir-fry Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) until dark red/black, grind into powder, and process into an ointment. Wrap thinly in cotton silk and insert into the ear. Change 3-4 times daily. Alternatively, wrapping in loose hair is also effective. Another version for sudden ear pain or fluid discharge: fry Armeniacae Semen Amarum until scorched, grind into powder, mix with onion juice to form pills, wrap in cotton silk, insert into the ear, and fumigate the ear canal.
