The ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney (Shen) and a cavity where the Heart (Xin) resides. If the meridians are invaded by wind-heat pathogenic factors, these pathogens ascend along the vessels to reach the ear. Qi accumulates and fails to disperse, while evil heat attacks and rushes, condensing to form swelling. In severe cases, yellow fluid may discharge, leading to the disease of sudden deafness (Bao Long).
Formulas:
Muxiang San (Cinnamon Twig Powder? Note: Muxiang is Costus Root, so "Costus Root Powder") (from *Shenghui Fang*), treating swelling of both ears.
Ingredients: Muxiang (Costi Radix), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Bailing (Ampelopsis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and stir-fried), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black skin removed), Zige (Puerariae Lobatae Radix? Note: Zige usually refers to Pueraria or similar vine root, context suggests herbal root), each one tael; Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean, three fen).
Preparation and Administration: Pound and sieve the ingredients into a powder. For each application, extract juice from fresh Ulmus alba bark (Yubai Pi), mix with a small amount of the powder, apply onto a cloth, and paste it over the swollen area to reduce swelling.
Yanhua Wan (Salt Flower Pills) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treating swelling of both ears with frequent severe pain.
Ingredients: Yanhua (Halitum/Salt Flower, four qian), Tiantingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, two liang, washed in river water and slightly fried), Xingren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen, peeled, tips removed, double-kernel fried, two liang), Zhu Zhi (Porcine Fat from the twelfth lunar month, two qian).
Preparation and Administration: Except for the porcine fat, pound and grind the other ingredients to an extremely fine powder, mix uniformly, then incorporate the porcine fat. Form pills the size of a jujube pit. Each time, wrap a pill in cotton, insert it into the ear, and replace once daily. After inserting the medicine, if sudden ear pain occurs, foul-smelling fluid discharges, and the limbs feel uncomfortable, do not doubt; this is a normal reaction.
Huang Wan [Name incomplete in source] (from source), treating swelling of both ears with purulent discharge and inability to hear human speech.
Sanwu San (Three-Ingredient Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treating ear swelling, heat, and pain, as well as sudden onset of swelling.
Ingredients: Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each half tael); Mugiezi Ren (Momordicae Semen, one tael).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder, then re-grind together to ensure uniformity. Take a small amount each time, mix with raw sesame oil (or generic raw oil) as needed, and apply to the swollen area of the ear.
Wubeizi Fang (Galla Chinensis Formula) (from *Haishang Fang*), treating ear sores with swelling and pain, as well as painful urination associated with ear sores or ulceration.
Administration: Grind Galla Chinensis into a fine powder, mix with cold water to form a paste for application. If dry, sprinkle the powder directly.
Fanshi San (Alum Powder) (from *Qianjin Fang*), treating sudden ear swelling with pus discharge, as well as chronic deafness that has not healed, accompanied by accumulated insects.
Administration: Take Alum (Fanshi), calcine until the juice dries up, take half a tael, and grind finely. Each time, use a reed tube to blow a small amount of powder into the ear, three to four times daily; or wrap in cotton like a jujube pit and insert into the ear. Then sprinkle stone salt powder on top. Remain still for a while before rising. No more than two treatments will result in permanent cure. Another method does not use salt.
Gualou Fang (Trichosanthis Fructus Formula) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treating sudden ear swelling.
