The ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney and serves as an orifice where the Heart's Qi resides. When wind-heat pathogens contend within the meridians, body fluids in the ear condense and accumulate, resembling bran flakes. Over time, these form hard nodules that are difficult to dissipate.
Formulas:
Cong Ye Gao (Scallion Juice Ointment) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats deafness caused by cerumen impaction, where the cerumen is hard and cannot be picked out. Instill into the ear.
Ingredients: Scallion juice (3 he), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, remove seedlings and leaves) (1 fen), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, cracked, remove skin and umbilicus) (1 fen). First, grind Xixin and Fuzi into powder. Mix with scallion juice.
Zhuzhi Gao (Pig Fat Ointment) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats deafness caused by cerumen impaction, where the cerumen is hard and cannot be picked out. Insert into the ear.
Ingredients: Fresh pig fat (1 he), Fu Xia Mo (Soot from the bottom of a cooking pot, half liang, ground). Mix and form into an ointment, shape into a date-pit size, wrap in silk, and insert into the ear.
Fanshi San (Alum Powder) [from *Shengji Zonglu*]: Treats cerumen blocking the ear.
Huanglian San (Coptis Powder, also known as Fuzi San) [from *Shibian Liangfang*]: Treats deafness caused by cerumen impaction, where the cerumen is hard and cannot be expelled, accompanied by ear pain, pus, and blood.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove rootlets) (half liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, cracked, remove skin and umbilicus) (1 fen). Grind into powder. Apply a small amount into the ear. Before application, wipe away any foul matter.
Earthworm Formula [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats dry deafness and impacted cerumen that cannot be expelled.
Crush naturally dead white-necked earthworms, place them in scallion leaves, seal the head with flour, steam until cooked and liquefied. Drip the juice into the ear until full.
Chaihu Cong'er Tang (Bupleurum Ear-Auditing Decoction) [from *Lanshi Micang*]: Treats dry ears with cerumen, tinnitus leading to deafness.
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (3 qian), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (4 qian), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle) (1 qian), Mengchong (Blattidae/Insect, remove wings and feet) (3), Shuizhi (Hirudo, half qian, stir-fried, ground separately), Shexiang (Moschi Moschus) (a little). Decoct to appropriate volume.
Kidney Qi connects to the ear; the ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney. If the meridians are invaded by wind pathogens, toxic vapors accumulate in the ear, causing pus and fluid discharge, accompanied by a sensation of stuffiness and pain.
