As for Liver Deficiency Eye Disease, the symptoms are diverse. Some present with sudden onset of swelling, some with unceasing tearing, some with the formation of nebulae and halos on the cornea, and some with blurred vision, unable to see clearly at far or near distances.
The *Longmu Lun* states: In external barrier eye disease caused by Liver deficiency and accumulated heat, at the initial stage, there is sudden swelling, redness, dryness, tearing, itching, pain that is difficult to endure, and gradually, toxic spots appear on the pupil and cornea.
A song says: Pain and redness arise from excessive effort and mental labor; eyes hurt and fear light, making it hard to open them. They flare up intermittently, as if caused by resentful ghosts and sorrowful spirits bringing disaster. If a doctor is consulted promptly, recovery is possible; one must know this is due to heat and fatigue in the Liver and Diaphragm. Seek decoctions urgently to remove the pathogen quickly, lest the root cause remain buried in the Zang organs. When one eye first becomes afflicted, the other will likely follow. If it passes lightly this year, it may become more frequent and dangerous in subsequent years. For treatment, Qingxiangzi Wan (Cocklebur Seed Pill) must be taken consistently; if surgery is needed to incise the eyelids to drain blood, Zhusha Fang (Cinnabar Formula) should be instilled into the eyes to restore vision and tonify the Liver.
Huanjing Buchgan Wan (Restore Vision Tonify Liver Pill)
Treats Liver deficiency, causing dim vision in both eyes and tearing upon exposure to wind.
Ingredients: Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), Asari Radix (Xixin, removed seedlings and leaves), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, sliced and baked), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi, slightly stir-fried), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiongqiong), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, removed rhizome head), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Poria (Baifuling, stir-fried), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, removed coarse bark).
Preparation: Powder the herbs, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
Dosage: Take 30 pills per dose.
Zhen Gan Wan (Sedate Liver Pill) [From *Longmu Fang*]
Treats insufficiency of the Liver Meridian, internal accumulation of wind-heat attacking the eyes, causing dim vision, itching, pain, difficulty opening the eyes due to astringency, excessive discharge, tearing, intermittent redness and swelling, or formation of barriers and nebulae. Suitable for all these conditions.
Ingredients: Poria (Baifuling, peeled, 1 liang), Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Juhua, 0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried, 0.5 liang each), Cortex Lycii (Digupi, cleaned of soil, 0.5 liang), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi, peeled), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 0.5 liang), Qingfengteng (Qingfeng, removed rhizome and seedlings, 1 liang each), Asari Radix (Xixin).
Preparation: Decoct in water to make a paste, then mix with herb powder to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
Dosage: Take 20 pills per dose.
Baiziren Wan (Platycladi Seed Pill) [From *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats Liver deficiency, blurred vision, inability to see far, dim eyeballs, dryness, pain, and nebulae that gather and disperse intermittently.
Ingredients: Platycladi Semen (Baiziren, ground), Coicis Semen (Yiyiren), Sesami Fructus Niger (Wumaren), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi), Dodonaeae Semen (Tusizi, soaked in wine and separately ground to powder, 1 liang each), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Cistanches Herba (Roucongrong, baked).
Preparation: Form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
Dosage: Take 20 pills per dose on an empty stomach.
Naoqing Xiangzi Wan (Borneol Cocklebur Seed Pill) [From *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats Liver deficiency with wind, frequent cold tearing, and dim vision.
Ingredients: Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao, finely ground), Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang, finely ground), Azurite (Zengqing, calcined and finely ground, 0.5 liang each), Cockleburs Seed (Qingxiangzi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, removed rhizome head), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Poria (Baifuling, washed and ground, 1 liang each), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinhua).
Preparation: Pound 300-200 times, form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
Gua Zi San (Melon Seed Powder) [From *Qianjin Fang*]
Tonifies the Liver, treats blurred and unclear vision. Also known as Shizi San (Ten Seeds Powder).
Ingredients: Benincasae Semen (Dongguazi), Cocklebur Seed (Qingxiangzi), Ulmi Fructus (Chongweizi), Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi), Vitexis Fructus (Mujingzi), Tribuli Fructus (Jili zi), Dodonaeae Semen (Tusizi), Brassicae Semens (Wujingzi), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi), Kochiae Scopariae Fructus ( Difuzi).
Usage: Add Asari Radix (Xixin, 0.5 liang), grind to powder and take.
Yuanzhi Wan (Polygalae Root Pill) [From *Zhizhi Fang*]
Treats clearing and benefiting the Heart and Liver, brightening eyes and dispelling nebulae.
Ingredients: Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria Cum Radix Xylomi (Fushen, removed wood), Aloe (Luhui, ground), Succinum (Hupo), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi, 0.5 liang each), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Dihuang), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Dihuang, washed and baked), Ulmi Fructus (Chongweizi), Asari Radix (Xixin), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi).
Usage: Decoct and drink.
Qianghuo San (Notopterygium Powder) [From *Longmu Lun*]
Sedates the Liver and brightens eyes, treats acute red eye, also general red eye and all internal/external barriers and nebulae.
Ingredients: Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Inulae Flos (Xuanjinhua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 0.5 liang each), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Broussonetiae Folium (Chuye), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, soaked in rice water, peeled, dried without direct fire), Mori Folium (Sangye).
Usage: Grind to fine powder, take with clear tea.
Note: Yin and Yang substances are paired; excess belongs to Yang, while leaves lacking substance belong to Yin, thus not obtaining the true essence. Avoid damp noodles and alcohol, otherwise all medicines will be ineffective.
Qingxiangzi Wan (Cocklebur Seed Pill) [From *Longmu Lun*]
Treats Liver deficiency, accumulated heat, external barrier.
Ingredients: Cocklebur Seed (Qingxiangzi, 2 liang), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Asari Radix (Xixin), Dry Rehmanniae Radix (Gan Dihuang), Dodonaeae Semen (Tusizi), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Ulmi Fructus (Chongweizi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Poria (Fuling).
Gan Dihuang Wan (Dry Rehmannia Pill) [From *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats Liver deficiency, unceasing tearing, nebulae invading the cornea, inability to see near, or cloudy vision where black and white are indistinguishable.
Ingredients: Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Gan Dihuang, baked), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Pruni Semen (Ruiren, peeled and ground), Dodonaeae Semen (Tusizi, soaked in wine overnight and separately ground), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 1 liang each), Asari Radix (Xixin, 0.5 liang).
Preparation: Grind to powder, mix with refined honey to form pills.
Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill) [From *Longmu Lun*]
Sedates the Liver and brightens eyes.
Ingredients: Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Juhua), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Platycladi Semen (Baiziren), Asari Radix (Xixin), Cinnamon Twig (Guiguan), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 0.5 liang each), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 3 fen), Ovis Hep (Jieyanggan, 1 piece).
Preparation: Combine sheep liver with other herbs to form pills.
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill, also known as Juhua Wan)
Treats strain and mental labor, Liver deficiency with wind-heat attacking the eyes causing redness, swelling, photophobia, and gradual formation of membranes. Also treats Liver-Kidney wind-toxicity and rising heat.
Note: Prolonged viewing damages Blood, which generates the Liver; thus, diligent writing damages the Liver leading to dim vision. Liver damage causes wind in the eyes, and heat rises, causing dimness. One should exclusively take tonifying medicines to nourish Blood and sedate the Liver, so vision naturally clears.
Ingredients: Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi, 1 liang each), Myrrha (Moyao), Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Juhua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Cinnamon Heart (Guixin), Bright Guang Zhu Sha (Guangming Zhusha, 0.5 liang each), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Gan Dihuang).
