The Liver is associated with blood and sinews. When Liver Qi is harmonious, Qi and Blood become robust and circulate through the sinew membranes, resulting in straight bones and flexible sinews, allowing Qi and Blood to flow smoothly. If Liver Qi is deficient, external Wind pathogens invade, knotting within the sinews and meridians, leading to spasmodic pain and twitching of the sinews and meridians.
Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction) [from *Shengji Zonglu*]: Treats deficiency of Liver Qi with external invasion of Wind pathogens, which knot in the sinews and meridians and flow into the collaterals, causing spasmodic pain and twitching of the sinews and meridians.
Ingredients: Duhuo (*Radix Angelicae Pubescentis*, removed rhizome), Bixie (*Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae*), Xixin (*Herba Asari*, removed seedlings and leaves), Renshen (*Radix Ginseng*), Suanzaoren (*Semen Ziziphi Spinosae*, lightly stir-fried), Niuxi (*Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae*, removed seedlings, sliced, soaked in wine and baked), Fuzi (*Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata*, removed root nodes, boiled while skimming foam then baked), Fangji (*Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae*), Guizhi (*Cortex Cinnamomi*, removed rough bark), Gancao (*Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata*, lightly roasted and chopped; each 1 liang). Chop the herbs into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take 3 qian per dose, add one zhan of water, three slices of Shengjiang (*Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens*), and three dates (Zao). Decoct until five or six parts remain, strain, add one he of Zhuli (*Natrii Carbonas Efflorescens* / Bamboo Sap - note: Zhuli usually refers to bamboo sap in this context, but chemically Natrii Carbonas is also possible; WHO standard for Zhuli is often Bamboo Juice/Sap), boil twice more, and take warm. Take at any time.
