The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states that heat in the Large Intestine causes the discharge of intestinal mucus. "Intestinal mucus" refers to the greasy mixture of body fluids and turbid substances within the intestines. Generally, accumulation of heat qi in the fu organs responsible for transportation and transformation leads to dysentery. If dysentery persists for a long time without resolution, the interior of the intestines becomes deficient and slippery, causing fluids and filth to be discharged. This condition arises from excess pathogenic heat qi coupled with deficiency of the true zang qi.
