Heat pathogen resides in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner). Due to coughing, it develops into Lung Asthma (Fei Wei, a chronic wasting disease of the lung characterized by dryness and weakness). The pulse is rapid at the Cun (inch) position. The symptoms include coughing with turbid saliva and frothy sputum in the mouth. In severe cases, there is dryness in the throat.
Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats Lung Asthma with dry throat, coughing with expectoration of pus and blood, distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, shortness of breath, emaciation, and loss of appetite.
Ingredients: Sheng Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, dried and sliced) 1 liang, Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with black skin removed) 1 liang, Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, herbs removed) 1 liang, She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) 0.5 liang, Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and crushed) 0.5 liang, Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed and dried) 0.5 liang, Zi Wan (Asteris Radix, herbs and soil removed), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, washed seven times in hot water), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, joints removed), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, black skin removed), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, crushed), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) — each 3 fen.
Preparation: Pound and sieve the ingredients. Take 3 qian per dose, add one zhan of water, one slice of fresh ginger, and two jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 7/10 volume, strain, and drink warm.
Tian Men Dong Wan (Asparagus Pill): Treats Lung Asthma with dry throat and irritability, phlegm obstruction with coughing, red and scanty urine, restlessness during sleep, and sore and swollen throat.
Ingredients: Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber, heart removed and dried) 1 liang, Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and crushed) 1 liang, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 3 fen, Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, soaked in hot water, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernel, fried) 1 liang, Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, heart removed and dried), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, fried until dry), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, honey-fried and crushed) — each 0.5 liang.
Preparation: Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of chicken heads. Take one pill after meals and before bedtime, chewed down with warm Ginseng decoction, or allowed to dissolve slowly in the mouth; swallowing saliva is also acceptable.
Di Huang Zi Su Jian (Rehmannia and Perilla Decoction): Treats Lung Asthma with wheezing and coughing, thick and sticky nasal discharge and sputum, and discomfort in the throat and diaphragm.
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, dried and sliced) 3 liang, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 2 liang (ground together with Di Huang to extract juice), Sheng Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber, heart removed) 0.5 jin, Sheng Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) 1 jin, Sheng Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed) 1 jin, Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernel) 3 liang (ground separately), Zi Su Zi (Perillae Fructus, fried and ground) 2 liang, Sheng Niu Bang (Arctii Fructus) 4 liang (finely chopped, combined with Xuan Shen, Zi Su Zi, and these four dried and ground together, mixed with a little water, squeezed through cloth to extract juice).
Preparation: Mix the two juices with the ground almonds evenly. Slowly decoct in a silver or earthenware vessel until slightly thick. Remove from heat, add 5 liang of white honey and 2 liang of true butter (Su), mix well. Steam in a rice steamer for a short time. Cool and store in a clean container. Take one small spoonful per dose, allow to dissolve slowly in the mouth, at any time, three times daily. Another view states that long-term use greatly benefits the Heart and Lungs, moistens the skin, and supports Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. Avoid cold/raw foods and pork.
Chai Hu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction): Treats Lung Asthma with chronic persistent cough, vexatious heat in the four limbs, flushed cheeks, and dry throat.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, herbs removed), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix, soil removed), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, heart removed and dried) — each 1 liang, He Li Le Pi (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium) 1 liang, Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, fried).
