Kidney deficiency with cold qi refers to a condition caused by insufficient kidney qi, long-term cold in the lower jiao (lower burner), external deficiency of yang qi, and internal accumulation of yin qi. The pathogenic cold qi resides within the zang-fu organs, accumulating without dispersing, attacking upward to the spleen. When the spleen is deficient and receives this attack, distension occurs; when cold combats the yin meridians, pain results. Furthermore, the branch meridians of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian run along both hypochondriac regions. Now that both the kidney and spleen are deficient, these symptoms arise.
Bichengqie San (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*), treats kidney deficiency with cold qi. Symptoms include: qi attacking the heart and abdomen causing pain, occasional vomiting and regurgitation, empty distension in both hypochondriac regions, loss of appetite, and weakness or coldness in the four limbs.
