When the fetus is cold, abdominal distension and deficiency-type pain occur. There is deficiency-type tinnitus in both hypochondriac regions, cold pain below the umbilicus, a sensation of needing to defecate, frequent urination, and loose stools due to deficiency. What causes this? The answer is: When the fetal qi is complete and the fetus has formed its structure and constitution, if one consumes sweet fruits or melons, drinks cold water, eats food at inappropriate times, cools off in the wind, or contracts pathogenic qi that does not accord with the season, it leads to fetal coldness. The fetus cannot remain secure. This manifests as pain in the skin and hair, stiffness and spasm of sinews and bones, and curling of the hands and feet, causing the mother to present with these critical symptoms. One should urgently administer An Tai He Qi San (Fetus-Anchoring and Qi-Harmonizing Powder).
Formula
An Tai He Qi San (from *Yi Fang Ji Cheng*) treats fetal coldness causing abdominal distension, deficiency-type pain, deficiency-type tinnitus in the hypochondria, cold pain below the umbilicus with urge to defecate, frequent urination, and loose stools due to deficiency.
He Zi (Chebulae Fructus, wrapped in flour and baked, pitted) 1 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white part removed) 0.5 liang, Gao Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizoma, stir-fried and crushed), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, not exposed to fire), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) each 0.5 liang. The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 0.7 portion remains, remove dregs, and take at any time.
Dietary restrictions omitted.
Mu Xiang San (also known as An Tai He Qi San, from *Yi Xue Lei Zheng*) is highly effective for treating fetal coldness.
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizoma), Nan Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chen Da Mi (Aged Rice Grain) in equal proportions. The above herbs are ground into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water and 3 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until 0.8 portion remains, and take orally.
Dang Gui Yin (Angelica Decoction) treats coldness in the abdomen during pregnancy and fetal restlessness.

The above herbs are cut like hemp seeds. Divide into two doses. Add 4 zhan of water, decoct until 1.5 zhan remains, remove dregs, and take divided into two doses before meals. If the patient walks for three to five *li*, take another dose.

"Pregnancy leakage" (Lou Tai) refers to vaginal bleeding occurring monthly during pregnancy. This is caused by deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians, which fail to restrain the blood of the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian. The Chong and Ren meridians are the sea of the meridians, originating from inside the uterus. The Hand-Taiyang meridian belongs to the Small Intestine, and the Hand-Shaoyin meridian belongs to the Heart; these two meridians are exterior-interior pairs. Upward they transform into milk, downward into menstruation. In pregnant women, menstruation stops because blood and qi are congested to nourish the fetus and stored to form milk. If the Chong and Ren qi are deficient, the interior of the uterus leaks and cannot restrain menstrual blood, hence monthly bleeding occurs. This is also called "Bao Lou" (Uterine Leakage). If the blood is exhausted, death ensues. Additionally, excessive labor, unregulated emotions (joy, anger, sorrow, fear), irregular diet including raw and cold foods, and exposure to wind-cold can cause fetal movement. If the mother has chronic diseases, the uterus is invaded by wind-cold, leading to imbalance of blood and qi, making the fetus insecure, thus causing bleeding. Sudden injury or agitation during pregnancy, or imbalance of cold and heat damaging the fetus, causes sudden abdominal pain and bleeding. If not stopped promptly, miscarriage will occur.
Formula
E Jiao Tang (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction) treats pregnancy leakage with continuous bleeding.
E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried until dry), Liu Ji Nu (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Chi Shi Zhi (Halloysit Rubrum), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, mustards removed) each 1.5 liang, Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, 5 pieces, crushed and baked), Sang Ji Sheng (Taxilli Caulis), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and dried), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos, stir-fried), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 1 liang, Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, pulp and bran removed, stir-bran fried) 1 liang 2 qian, Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) 0.8 fen.
Xu Duan Wan (Dipsacus Pill) treats pregnancy leakage with continuous bleeding and intra-abdominal pain. Improper care during pregnancy leads to monthly bleeding, termed "leakage." Due to deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians, the fetus is not secured and nourished, so blood flows down like a leaking vessel. Prolonged leakage deprives the fetus of nourishment, leading to withering and dryness.
Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, peel and navel removed), Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, soaked in wine, baked, pounded separately), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried and crushed), Shan Yu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, baked) each 2 liang. The above are ground into powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine on an empty stomach and in the evening.
Jie He San (also known as Ren Shen San, from *Yi Xue Lei Zheng*) treats unstable fetus, or injury to the uterus and fetus due to sexual activity, fright, overexertion, or ingestion of toxic substances, leading to uterine deficiency and slipping, with dripping menstrual blood. If not treated urgently,敗血 (stagnant blood) may rush to the heart, endangering both mother and child, leading to fetal dryness and critical condition.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, rhizome removed), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Zhu Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, not exposed to fire), Qing Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, green), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white part removed), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome), Nuo Mi (Glutinous Oryzae Semen) in equal proportions. The above are ground into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 portion remains, and take orally. Avoid raw/cold foods, chicken, duck, fish, and wheat/noodle products.

The above are made into coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 0.7 portion remains, remove dregs, and take warm on an empty stomach.
Huang Qi Yin (Astragalus Decoction) treats pregnancy leakage with monthly bleeding. This is due to deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians, failing to restrain the Hand-Taiyang and Hand-Shaoyin meridians, causing blood to flow down. The Chong and Ren meridians are the sea of the meridians, originating from the uterus. Now unable to restrain the meridian blood, it becomes leakage. Blood exhaustion leads to death.
