The fetus resides within the uterine sac (Bao Gong), perceiving the external environment through the mother's hearing. Once the fetal Qi (vital energy) is initially perceived, careful nursing and caution are required. If the pregnancy months are full, or if one attempts to force labor prematurely, when the fetal form is complete and spirit is established, a sudden fright or shock to the mother may result in "Fetal Fright" (Jing Tai). This condition causes irregular fetal movement and instability; it should be treated promptly. Otherwise, the essence and Qi may congregate pathologically, leading to epilepsy or madness in the child later in life.
It is also stated that during pregnancy, symptoms such as mental flustered palpitations (Xin Song Ji), frequent waking from dreams with fright, distension of both hypochondria, abdominal fullness with urgent pain radiating to the umbilicus, restlessness in sitting and lying, and rapid, forced breathing constitute Fetal Fright. Why? The answer is: Once the fetal Qi is formed and the five Zang organs are nourished, external noise and shouting can cause mental flustered palpitations, thereby inducing Fetal Fright, resulting in pain in bones and sinews, and discomfort in the four limbs. One should immediately decoct Da Sheng San to protect the pregnancy and avoid danger.
Furthermore, Fetal Fright in pregnancy refers to the situation near term or impending delivery, where the fetal consciousness is already developed. External physical strain or injury causes the fetus inside to become frightened and agitated.
