When the fetus has been delivered but the placenta (Baoyi) fails to follow, this condition is commonly referred to in the world as "Xi Bao" (Stagnant Placenta). This often occurs because the mother exerted excessive effort during the initial stage of labor. After the fetus is born, her body becomes exhausted, making it impossible to continue pushing to expel the placenta. Additionally, if the postpartum period is invaded by wind-cold pathogenic factors, it leads to coagulation and stagnation of Qi and Blood, causing fatigue and inability to move, thereby resulting in the retention of the placenta. This not only prolongs the delivery process but may also endanger life.

Zhuangqi Yixue Tang (Strengthening Qi and Nourishing Blood Decoction): Treats postpartum placental retention. It addresses cases caused by invasion of wind-cold pathogenic factors leading to Qi and Blood stagnation, or cases due to exhaustion of Qi and strength preventing the expulsion of the placenta.
Ingredients: Sheng Gan Di Huang (Fried Rehmanniae Radix), Ren Shen (Sliced Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Sliced and Fried Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1 liang), Dai Zhe Shi (Ground separately Hematitum, 0.5 liang), Mu Xiang (1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush and sieve the above five herbs to make a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with wine.

Another Prescription:
Take the tongue of a worn winnowing basket, burn it to ash, and grind it finely. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with wine.

Ingredients: Xiangmo (Fragrant Ink), Shexiang (Musk, each 1 qian, ground together finely).
Preparation and Administration: Mix the two ingredients with rabbit brain from the twelfth lunar month to form pills the size of Sophorae Japonicae Fructus (Chinese Scholar Tree Fruit). Take 3 pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine. No specific time restriction; stop when expelled.

Congyou Fang (Scallion Oil Formula): Treats retained placenta.
Ingredients: Congbai (Three scallion whites), Mayou (Half he of Sesame Oil).

Yannian Fang (Longevity Formula): Treats retained placenta. Abdominal distension can be fatal.
Swallow three egg yolks. Simultaneously, insert hair into the throat to induce vomiting, which expels the placenta. If extremely weak, boil one earthworm in water for twenty boils, pour the juice into the mouth. Swallowing the juice expels the placenta.

Treatment for retained placenta:
Use 1 liang of Honghua (Carthami Flos), boil in wine to obtain a thick decoction and drink. Another source says administer with warm wine.

Another Prescription: Treats retained placenta, and dead fetus with putrid blood entering the placenta, forming clumps, causing urgent distension rushing to the heart, unbearable pain.

Roast Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), remove skin and tendons, bake the clean flesh until dry, and grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, steep in boiling water (half bowl), take warm. For all cases of retained placenta and putrid blood rushing to the heart causing blood stagnation, spraying cold water will trap the putrid blood, leading to death in 9 out of 10 cases. When blood disperses and distension subsides, the placenta descends naturally.

Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder): Treats retained placenta.
Use Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) as powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine or soup is especially good. Boy's urine is also acceptable.

Treatment for retained placenta causing placental rot:
Zexie Ye (Alismatis Plant-aquatica Leaf, 3 liang), Huashi (Talcum, 5 liang powder), Sheng Mayou (Raw Sesame Oil, 2 he). Boil Alismatis Plant-aquatica Leaf in 1.5 sheng of water to obtain 0.7 sheng, remove dregs. Add Talcum and Raw Sesame Oil, take in one dose.

Treatment for retained placenta:
