Abdominal pain after childbirth is caused by insufficient discharge of lochia during delivery, where residual blood and qi in the uterine collaterals clash and strike each other, leading to abdominal pain. If exposed to cold again, the blood coagulates to form a blood mass (Xue Jia, an abdominal mass), which also leads to impaired water metabolism.

Commentary: Postpartum dysentery is not a single syndrome; it must be regulated according to its cause. Since it is said to be due to cold and wind, various conditions may arise. Cold, wind, and dampness are external causes, while anger, joy, worry, and thought stem from internal nature. Moreover, fatigue, overwork, and hunger all cause suffering. For profuse watery diarrhea, Tiao Zhong Tang can be used; for red and white leukorrhea, this formula cannot cure it. Each category has its own correct formula. Here, only Tao Jiao San and Baitouweng Tang are recorded for reference; others are selected from the Dysentery section. It is true that eating meat too early or overeating causes stagnation, leading to umbilical and abdominal pain and dysentery. The method is to digest the stagnation to heal, but harsh purgatives like Pharbitis Seed (Qianniu) and Croton Seed (Badou) should not be used to further deplete qi and blood. In the second question, pills are best; if unable to distinguish in haste, use Zhi Zhong Tang from the Bureau Formulary plus Amomum Fruit (Suosharen).
