The Heart desires bitter. The Lungs desire pungent. The Liver desires sour. The Spleen desires sweet. The Kidneys desire salty. This is the internal correspondence of the Five Flavors to the Qi of the Five Zang Organs. If the Zang organs have heat, sores will arise.

Duhuo Jiejin Gao (Angelica Pubescens Decoction for Relieving Jaw Lock) treats cold in the tongue and Small Intestine Fu organs. It is indicated for symptoms such as retraction of the tongue base, jaw lock (trismus), and bluish lips.
Ingredients: Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Xiongxiong (Radix Chuanxiong), Kuli Genpi (Cortex Pruni Armeniaceae Bitter), each 3 liang; Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Xixin (Herba Asari), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), each 1 liang; Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), 2 he; Mangcao (Herba Siegesbeckiae - *Note: Text fragmentary*).
Prepared as a plaster/paste.
Another method using fresh Aiye (Artemisia Argyi Leaves):
If fresh Artemisia Argyi leaves are unavailable, take dried leaves and pound them. Soak in one sheng of water, heat and pound. Apply with cloth bandages to the swollen and obstructed area, sealing it. Continue until healed.
Longshi San (Dragon Stone Powder) treats upper jiao congestion and toxicity in adults and children. It addresses mouth and tongue sores, pharyngeal swelling and obstruction, pain, and stifling sensation. Use a small amount of powder applied to the affected area, swallowing saliva to deliver it.
Ingredients: Zhusha (Cinnabar, prepared by levigation, 2.5 liang); Hanshuishi (Calcitritum, calcined red-hot, 2 jin); Sheng Naozi (Borneolum Syntheticum, ground, 2.5 qian). Grind all into powder. Use 5-7 times daily.
At night during sleep...
Chuihou San (Blowing Throat Powder) treats excessive heat in the Triple Burner. It addresses mouth and tongue sores, pharyngeal swelling and obstruction, and mental confusion/stupor.
Ingredients: Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae, 1 liang); Penxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 8 liang); Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 1.5 liang). Mix Penxiao, Qingdai, and Puhuang together using one sheng of Bohe juice (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba juice). (*Text fragmentary regarding application site*).
The Heart governs blood and opens into the tongue. If the Heart accumulates heat, blood becomes agitated by heat and moves recklessly. It may overflow into the orifices of the Heart, resulting in bleeding from the tongue.
Prescriptions
For black spots on the tongue with several holes the size of beans, and bleeding like a gushing spring: This is a Heart disease.
Ingredients: Rongyan (Sal Rubrum), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), each 5 liang; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), each 2 liang. Grind into powder.
Make into honey pills.
Xiangshen Wan (Aromatic Ginseng Pill) treats excessive Heat in the Heart causing bleeding from the tongue.
Ingredients: Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Sheng Puhuang (Fresh Pollinis Typhae), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed and baked), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and baked), each half liang; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Radix Rehmanniae, baked), each 1 liang. Grind into powder.
Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction) treats Heat in the Heart causing bleeding from the tongue like a gushing spring.
Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, chopped), Qianggen (Radix Saussureae, chopped), Xiaoji Gen (Radix Cirsii Japonici, chopped), each 1.5 liang; Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, stems removed, one handful); Ningshuishi (Stibnite, crushed), 3 liang. Coarsely crush and sieve.
Cunjin San (Inch-Gold Powder) treats irritability due to Heart channel heat, reckless movement of blood, and continuous bleeding from the tongue.
Ingredients: Xin Puhuang (Fresh Pollinis Typhae, 3 qian); Xin Baifan (Fresh White Flour, 3 qian); Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, ground); Sheng Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, raw), each half qian. Grind extremely fine. Take one qianbi dose mixed with raw Lotus Root Juice (Zhou Ou Zhi).
Wenge San (Clam Shell Powder) treats heat congestion causing tongue bleeding like a spring.
Ingredients: Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, washed), Baijiaoxiang (Elemi Resin), Musifen (Concha Ostreae, powdered), equal parts. Grind into powder. Apply a small amount to the lesion. Alternatively, cauterize the hole with a heated iron comb.
E'jiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) treats continuous bleeding from the tongue.
Ingredients: E'jiao (Colla Corii Asini, fried dry), Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae), Huangbo (Cortex Phellodendri, finely chopped), each 1 fen. Grind into fine powder. Take one qianbi dose mixed with Raw Dihuang Juice (Sheng Dihuang Zhi). Take two doses.
Shuai'ai Tang (Cooked Mugwort Decoction) treats latent Heat in the Heart channel causing tongue bleeding, as well as various hemorrhagic conditions.
Ingredients: Shuai'ai (Cooked Folium Artemisiae Argyi, stir-fried with half he of glutinous rice), Songhuang (Pine Pollen), Baye (Folium Camelliae Sinensis, roasted), each half liang. Coarsely crush and sieve. Take three qianbi doses. Add one sheng of water, decoct to seven-tenths volume.
Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pill) treats tongue bleeding with holes like needle pricks.
Ingredients: Zijinsha (Purple Gold Sand, i.e., the solid part at the top of Vespa nest, ground, 1 liang); Lushen (Aloe, ground, 2 qian); Beimu (Flos Fritillariae Cirrhosae, heart removed, 4 qian). Grind into powder. Blend with refined honey to make pills.

Formula for Tongue Bleeding Like Needle Holes
Ingredients: Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, half liang); Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 3 liang); Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, 20 fruits). Soak the above herbs in two sheng of wine overnight. Strain. Boil three times. Take in one dose.
Shengjin San (Holy Gold Powder) treats sudden continuous bleeding from the tongue.
Ingredients: Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, 1 liang); Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 1 fen). Grind into fine powder. Take one qianbi dose after meals, mixed with fresh drawn water. Twice daily.
Yujin San (Curcuma Powder) treats accumulated Heat in the Heart and fullness of blood vessels causing tongue bleeding.
Ingredients: Yujin (Radix Curcumae Longae, 1 liang); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and baked, half liang). Grind into powder. Take one qianbi dose, mixed with decoction of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Wumei (Fructus Mume).
Dihuang San (Rehmannia Powder, from *Shenghui Fang*) treats tongue bleeding like needle holes.
Ingredients: Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Dried Radix Rehmanniae, baked dry), Lu'anjiao (Colla Cornus Cervi, fried dry), each 1 liang. Grind into powder. Take two qianbi doses after meals, mixed with glutinous rice drink.
Bisheng San (Invincible Powder, from *Weishi Fang*) treats She Nu (Tongue Hemorrhage).
Ingredients: Zhen Puhuang (True Pollinis Typhae, lightly fried), Lu'er Qing (Turquoise/Copper Carbonate), equal parts. Grind into powder. Apply a small amount to the affected area. Rinse with warm salt water after a short while.
For sudden stiffness of the tongue and continuous bleeding:
Rinse mouth with decoction of Muzei (Equiseti Herba). Effective.
Qingxin San (Clear Heart Powder) treats bleeding from the tongue and bleeding from the nine orifices.
Take one handful of Ciji (Spinaciae Oleracea Herba? Or likely Ci Ji Li/Tribulus based on context of hemostasis, but literally "Thistle"). Grind and squeeze to extract juice. Mix with half a zhan of wine and take. If fresh juice is unavailable, grind dried herb into powder. Take three qianbi doses mixed with cold water. Also treats [omitted].
Huangbo San (Phellodendron Powder) treats extreme Heart Heat causing tongue bleeding.
Use 2 liang of Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri). Coat with honey, roast slowly over low fire until scorched. Pound and sift into powder. Take two qianbi doses, mixed with warm glutinous rice drink.
Formula for Sudden Tongue Bleeding Like Needle Holes (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Take one sheng of Xiangru juice (Elsholtziae Spica Juice). Take three times daily. Another method: chew thoroughly to stop bleeding. Another method: prepare as Xiangshu.
Formula for Tongue Bleeding Like Needle Holes (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Use 2-3 sheng of Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean/Douchi). Add 3 sheng of water and boil. Strain when boiling. Take one sheng. Three times daily. Another method: use one he of Douchi, one bowl of water, boil a few times.
Formula for Tongue Bleeding Like Needle Holes (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Take one sheng of Chixiaodou (Vigna Umbellata), pound to碎 (crushed). Add 3 sheng of water, mix and stir to extract juice. Drink. Another method: mix with Cu (Vinegar) and apply to the tongue.
For continuous tongue bleeding, spontaneous bleeding with small holes: This is named She Nu (Tongue Hemorrhage) (from *Zhushi Jiyan Fang*):
Dry Huaihua (Flos Sophorae) into powder. Apply to the tongue. Or stir-fry Huaihua, remove fire toxicity on the ground, then apply. If the tongue is swollen, sprinkle dry Zhen Puhuang (True Pollinis Typhae) powder.
For self-inflicted cut through the center of the tongue with continuous bleeding:
Brush the severed area with Rice Vinegar using a chicken feather. Bleeding stops immediately. Then use Zhen Puhuang (True Pollinis Typhae), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, skin and tip removed), and Pengsha (Borax) in small amounts. Grind into fine powder. [Mix with] Refined Honey.
Formula for Tongue Bleeding Like Needle Holes (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Burn one Badou (Fructus Crotonis Tiglii) to ash. Burn a clump of loose hair the size of a chicken egg to ash. Mix with wine and take.
Formula for Tongue Bleeding Like a Spring (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Cauterize the hole with a red-hot iron chopstick. Effective.
For Tongue Bleeding Like a Spring:
Sprinkle with Wubei Jiaoxiang (Galla and Elemi mixture) and Musafen (Oyster Shell powder). Or cauterize the hole with a heated iron chopstick.
