Deficiency consumption (Xu Lao) leads to a reduction in body fluids. This reduction is caused by insufficiency of Kidney Qi (Kidney energy). The Kidneys govern fluids and transform them into saliva. If the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner, encompassing the Heart and Lungs) is deficient, deficiency generates heat. Heat rushes against the throat, causing the saliva to coagulate into a thick and sticky consistency.
