In patients with consumptive disease (Xu Lao), blood and Qi have been depleted for a long time. Cold pathogens, damp-heat, lie latent and knot in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), damaging the Heart and Lungs internally, and impairing Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. The Heart governs Blood; Blood belongs to Ying. The Lung governs Qi; Qi belongs to Wei. When Ying and Wei are disharmonious, Metal (Lung) and Fire (Heart) clash, making the condition difficult to treat. Some patients, due to coughing, occasionally expectorate pus and blood, which is caused by the putrefaction of body fluids.
