In patients with deficiency consumption (Xu Lao), there is cold in the middle jiao, which fails to transform and digest food. When cold qi invades the stomach, it causes stagnation and fullness, leading to obstruction. Consequently, although the patient may have an appetite, the stomach cannot receive or process the food, causing qi to rebel upward. This results in symptoms such as vomiting, hiccups, epigastric distension and discomfort, a sensation of fullness and rebellion under the heart, and general uneasiness. The condition of vomiting and hiccups in deficiency consumption arises because individuals injured by overwork suffer from disharmony among the five zang organs and dysfunction of the six fu organs, primarily due to weak stomach qi. The stomach is the sea of water and grain; when it is weakened and invaded by cold, it cannot handle the food and drink, leading to rebellious qi and vomiting.
