The categories of birds and beasts are numerous. Some have inherent toxicity by nature, some are non-toxic but consume toxic substances, and others generate toxicity due to mutual aversion, repulsion, or interaction. If humans do not eat these domestic animals (referring to cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, and dogs) carefully, although they are generally non-toxic and harmless, if they die naturally or from an epidemic, they contain toxins. After consumption, symptoms such as changes in complexion, chest tightness, and body numbness may occur. Severe cases may even present with vomiting, diarrhea, dysentery, and unbearable abdominal pain, leading to death in many instances. The meat of fine horses, as well as the meat under the saddle, is toxic and should not be eaten; ingestion can be fatal. Ordinary horse meat is inherently non-toxic, but if it dies from an epidemic, it becomes toxic to humans. For meats that are inherently non-toxic, if they are wild-raised or die after consuming miscellaneous items, the meat is toxic. Ingestion causes toxins to enter the internal organs, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, restlessness, and discomfort. Dog meat has a very hot and dry nature and should not be consumed in excess. Dog meat that dies from epidemics or poisoning is toxic, difficult to digest, and causes abdominal distension, irritability, and mental confusion. Duck meat is inherently non-toxic and does not harm the human body. Occasional consumption, if not digested properly, can lead to the formation of abdominal diseases. For any birds or beasts that die naturally, their livers are toxic and should not be eaten, as they often cause harm. This is especially severe for those dying from epidemics, where victims often suffer from diarrhea, dysentery, vomiting, and mental agitation. Various dried meats stored in leaky thatched roofs during rain acquire high toxicity. Ingestion leads to acute conditions that are incurable, and some cases result in immediate death. Dried meats that do not move when roasted but move when exposed to water should not be eaten. Dried meats and cooked meats should not be stored in airtight containers to prevent gas accumulation; ingestion can be fatal. Hunters often coat arrowheads with poison to hunt insects and deer; skin injuries are fatal due to the toxin. Humans obtaining such meat should discard the poisoned parts near the arrow wound and consume the rest. Accidental ingestion of the poisoned part can lead to death.
