Yangming Dryness-Jin governs the first half of the year. Shaoyin Ministerial Fire governs the second half of the year. The central movement is Shao-Yu Water運 (Water Movement). The water qi of the year is deficient. The transformation and operation lag behind the heavenly timing.
Yangming Dryness-Jin is above (Si Tian / Heaven's Governance). Taiyang Cold-Water is below (Zai Quan / Earth's Governance). It specializes in its transformation; rain and moisture intersect, giving rise to dryness.
In this year, Metal Qi is above, Fire Qi is below, and Water Movement is in the middle. Water overcomes Fire, and Fire overcomes Metal. The Heavenly Qi is weak. Water can restrain Fire and generate Metal, and also generate the Movement. It is appropriate to observe the changes of Qi before the middle of the year, governed by Yangming Dryness-Jin. If Dryness is excessive, trees will fruit late, and grasses will grow late. Internal changes occur in sinews and bones. The people suffer from pain in the left hypochondrium, head discomfort, sudden severe pain in the heart and hypochondrium, inability to turn or lie on one side, dry throat, dusty complexion, lower back pain, eye disorders, skin sores, acne, and carbuncles. The root of the disease lies in the Liver. Diagnosis focuses on the Foot-Tai Chong Meridian.
After the middle of the year, governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. Heat dominates internally, causing steam to rise from rivers and marshes, making dark places appear bright. The people often experience abdominal borborygmus, Qi rushing upward, and chest asthma.
The First Qi period begins at the beginning of Si hour on the Day of Great Cold in the Geng-Shen year and ends at the beginning of Mao hour on the Spring Equinox day of this year, lasting 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Shao-Jiao Wood. The Guest Qi is Yangming Dryness-Metal. Use Sour flavor to tonify Wood, Pungent flavor to drain Metal, and Bitter flavor to drain heat. Eat white grains for the year, with millet as intercalary grain. Even if Dryness pathogen invades, it cannot harm the body.
The Second Qi period begins at the exact Zi hour after Great Heat and ends at the exact Xu hour on the Autumn Equinox day, lasting over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao-Gong Earth. The Guest Qi is Taiyang Cold-Water. The central movement is Water, where Qi and Movement are identical, known as Si Qi (Governance Qi). Cold rain descends. Diseases manifest as sudden collapse, trembling, delirium, shortness of breath, dry throat with thirst, heart pain, carbuncles, malaria, cold syndromes, sores, bone flaccidity, and bloody stools. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Taiyang (Cold), using Bitter flavor to tonify, Salty flavor to drain, Bitter flavor to consolidate, and Pungent flavor to moisten. Eat red grains for the year, with Ji (Setaria italica) as intercalary grain. Even if Cold pathogen invades, it cannot harm the body. In this phase, avoid using cold when far from cold; do not violate the cold nature of the Governance Qi.
The Fifth Qi period begins at the beginning of Hai hour on the Autumn Equinox day and ends at the You hour on the Minor Snow day, lasting over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai-Shang Metal. The Guest Qi is Jueyin Wind-Wood. The central movement is Water, which generates Wood. The spring-like generating force acts in reverse, causing grasses to grow luxuriantly. The people's Qi is harmonious. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Jueyin (Wind), using Pungent flavor to tonify, Sour flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. Eat red grains for the year, with beans as intercalary grain. Even if Heat pathogen invades, it cannot harm the body.
These are the transformations of the Six Qi. At the transition of annual Qi, if Heavenly Qi prevails, Shaoyang Ministerial Fire restores; if Earthly Qi prevails, Taiyang Cold-Water restores. Carefully examine the location of Yin and Yang and regulate them, taking the restoration of upright Qi as the standard.
