When Yin and Yang, clear and turbid qi interfere with each other, it is called Qi Disarray (Qi Luan). When Qi disarrays between the intestines and stomach, Huoluan (Cholera-like disease characterized by sudden vomiting and diarrhea) occurs. This happens due to overeating or exposure to wind and cold, which disrupts the harmony of Yin and Yang, causing clear and turbid energies to mix. If the intestines and stomach are deficient, they are affected, resulting in Huoluan. In Huoluan, if heart pain precedes, vomiting occurs first; if abdominal pain precedes, diarrhea occurs first.
Wind pathogen damages blood and Qi, closing the skin pores tightly, preventing the free circulation of blood and Qi, leading to high fever. Wind pathogen enters the meridians, and Qi rushes upward to the head, causing headache. Wind-Qi enters the intestines and stomach; intestinal deficiency leads to diarrhea, while Stomach Qi rebelling upward causes vomiting, thus resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. Severe vomiting and diarrhea cause irritability due to the deficiency of Zang-Fu organs. Additionally, cold extremities and sudden exhaustion of Yang Qi are referred to as SiNi (Four Coldness/Extremity Cold). If contracted during pregnancy, severe vomiting and diarrhea may damage the fetus.
