Patients suffering from severe cholera-like illness (Huoluan) nearing death are caused by the collapse of healthy Qi (Zhengqi) and the flourishing of pathogenic factors (Xieqi). This may occur when pathogenic factors suddenly contend violently, preventing vomiting or diarrhea, or even after extreme vomiting and diarrhea, the pathogenic factors remain strong.
Formulas:
Chifuling Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Decoction, from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats Huoluan with incessant vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal pain with muscle spasms (Zhuanjin), mental restlessness, and a sensation of impending death.
Ingredients: Chifuling (Poria with Red Skin, peeled black skin), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Huoxiangye (Patchouli Leaf), Huangqi (Astragalus Root, sliced), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, stir-fried), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, sliced and roasted). (Dosage adjustments apply as per ancient methods, taken without strict time constraints).
Formula for treating Huoluan where the patient is critically ill and unconscious/unrecognizable (from *Shenghui Fang*):
Take Sanjisusu (Elsholtzia Spica) 3 liang, chop it, decoct in 3 large bowls of water until reduced to 1.5 bowls, filter the dregs, and take warm in three divided doses.
Formula for treating Huoluan with vertigo, falling down, and near-death state:
Take Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel) 2 qian, decoct in water and administer orally. Heat bricks, pour vinegar on them, wrap in thick cloth, and apply hot compress to the epigastrium to restore consciousness. This method also treats muscle spasms.
Hujiao Tang (Pepper Decoction, from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats Huoluan with mental restlessness and a sensation of impending death.
Ingredients: Hujiao (Black Pepper, 30 grains), Jishibai (White excrement of chicken, half he, lightly stir-fried), Gaoliangjiang (Galangal Root, chopped), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig heart, each half liang), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit, dried), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, core removed). (Decoct and take warm).
awei Wan (Asafoetida Pill, from *Shengji Zonglu*): Treats Huoluan without vomiting or diarrhea, abdominal distension, and stifling oppression nearing death.
Ingredients: Awei (Asafoetida, ground), Qingjupi (Green Tangerine Peel, soaked in water, white pith removed, roasted, each 1 liang), Suan Shiliupi (Acid Pomegranate Peel), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, each half liang), Chenqu (Aged Medicated Leaven, stir-fried, 1 liang). (Process into pills).
Fuzi San (Aconite Powder, from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, where vital signs are faint and nearing cessation.
Ingredients: Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 1 liang, processed, peel and umbilicus removed), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, half liang, processed and chopped), Gancao (Licorice Root, half fen, honey-fried to light red and chopped), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig heart, 3 fen). Grind all ingredients into a fine powder.
Shengjiang San (Fresh Ginger Powder): Treats Huoluan with incessant vomiting and a sensation of impending death.
Ingredients: Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 2 liang, sliced and roasted), Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, soaked in water, white pith removed and roasted), Gan Mugua (Dried Chaenomeles Fruit, each 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with water.
Xiongquefen Wan (Male Sparrow Excrement Pill, from *Shengji Zonglu*): Treats Huoluan caused by overeating and excessive cooling, leading to abdominal fullness, near-death sensation, and obstruction of upper and lower pathways.
Take 21 grains of Xiongquefen (Excrement of male sparrow), grind finely, mix with half a cup of warm wine, and take. If ineffective, take again.
Shengjiang Yin (Fresh Ginger Drink, from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats Huoluan with incessant vomiting and diarrhea, nearing death.
Ingredients: Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang), Niufen (Cow Dung, 1 sheng). Chop ginger, decoct in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng, and take warm in divided doses.
Secret Formula for treating Huoluan refractory to conventional medicine (from *Qianjin Fang*):
Burn the menstrual cloth of an unmarried girl mixed with blood into ash. Take one fangcun bi (approx. 2.7 cm cube) mixed with water. Use this if hundred formulas fail.
Huoming San (Life-Saving Powder, from *Huming Fang*): Treats all men, women, and children with upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, Huoluan not stopping, cyanotic-black complexion, and life-threatening condition.
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Xixin (Asarum Root, each 1 fen), Caodoukou (Black Cardamom Seed), Roudoukou (Nutmeg), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, each half liang), Guangui (Cassia Bark), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit).
