The term "Gui Yan" (Ghost Oppression) means to be constrained or oppressed. It refers to being suppressed and distressed by evil ghostly energies during sleep. Generally, when a person sleeps, their Hun (Ethereal Soul) and Po (Corporeal Soul) interact; upon waking, the physical form expands. If the physical body is frequently startled and frightened, causing the souls to depart from the body, one may become unable to wake up due to oppression, potentially leading to death. In such cases, one must rely on others to call out and use herbal formulas or techniques to revive them. If oppression occurs in front of a light source, it is because the Hun naturally emerges from brightness, so calling it out poses no taboo. However, if oppression occurs in darkness, one must avoid shining fire/light, as this will prevent the Hun from returning, potentially leading to death. Furthermore, when someone suffers from oppression, one should call out loudly from a distance, not approach closely and shout urgently, lest the divine spirits scatter or fluctuate wildly.

All ingredients are finely powdered and formed into pills with refined honey. Consult a physician for pulse diagnosis; pulses may vary between large/small and short/long, indicating uneven Qi and Blood, with pathogenic factors damaging healthy Qi. The official stated that while walking, he encountered a woman in green clothes whose face was unseen; she punched his hypochondrium, causing sharp pain that persisted with alternating chills and fever. He was advised to take Badu Chi Wan. The official noted reading in Mingyi Lu regarding Li Ziyu's use of Badu Chi Wan to kill ghosts. After taking the pill and lying down, two dou of clear water were discharged the next morning, resulting in immediate recovery. It is said to be miraculous. Roast Tao Ren (Peach kernel), remove skin and tips, thirty kernels. Administer with urine.
Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder) [from Shenghui Fang]: Treats sudden onset of oppression.
Powder Xionghuang (Realgar), sift finely, and insufflate into the nostrils using a tube. Another prescription adds Guixin (Cinnamon heart) powder for better effect.

Use tiger head bone as a pillow. Alternatively, place 1 fen of Shexiang (Musk) near the head, or administer a small amount of Musk orally.
Treating sudden oppression [from Shibian Liangfang]:
Have one person guard the head and another stand outside the door. Call the patient's name; the guardian answers "Here," and the patient revives.
Treating death by oppression without consciousness [from Qianjin Fang]:
Be cautious with lights/fire; do not let people move the limbs. Place a cow lying on top of the patient, and they will awaken. If suddenly unable to speak, take chicken heads from the east gate, powder them, and administer with wine.
Another Formula [from Shenghui Fang]: Treats sudden oppression with unconsciousness, wandering Hun, and entrapment by pathogens. Strictly avoid fire/light.

Place Shexiang (Musk) near the head in any quantity. Also, administer a small amount of Musk orally.
Treating sudden oppression without waking:
Patients with sudden oppression often cannot speak. No need to shout loudly; simply knock on the bedstead, and the patient will awaken spontaneously.
Treating sudden death by oppression [from Shibian Liangfang]:
Apply mud from the bottom of a well to the dead person's eyes. Have someone lower the head towards the well, call the name, and they will revive.
Another Formula:
Do not use fire/light. Firmly bite the heel and the big toenail to revive. If biting the heel fails, use Fanshi San (Alum Powder). See entry for "Gui Ji".
Another Formula [from Zhouhou Fang]:
Cover the patient's face with a clay steamer (Zeng). Someone should quickly smash the steamer, and the patient will awaken.
Another Formula [from Zhouhou Fang]:
Place an ox hoof or horse hoof over the oppressed person. This can also treat sudden death. Ox hooves are particularly effective.
Sudden oppression without consciousness, or general predisposition to nightmares/bad dreams [from Zhouhou Fang]:
Take ashes from a person burned to death. Place in the pillow or shoes. Sleeping or walking with it stops the affliction.
Preventing Oppression and Awakening [from Zhouhou Fang]:
Use a true red copper square foot as a pillow.
Treating sudden death or death by oppression [from Zhouhou Fang]:
Pinch the nails of both hands to induce awakening.
