Treats women with blood syncope (xue yun) and blood confusion (xue mi), where failing blood rushes to the heart, causing dizziness, oppression, and unconsciousness.
Grind Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) into fine powder. Take an amount the size of a bean, and blow it into the nostrils with a bamboo tube; the patient will awaken immediately.
Treats excessive bleeding after childbirth, leading to deficiency-heat irritability and thirst.
Take 2 qian of Zhen Puhuang (Lygodii Spora). Swallow with warm water. If thirst and restlessness are severe, swallow with newly drawn cold well water.
Treats high fever during pregnancy due to seasonal pathogens (shi qi), resulting in the fetus not being expelled. This is a fetal protection formula.
Grind Fulonggan (Caulis Longan / Hearth Earth) into fine powder. Mix with water and apply to the area two cun below the umbilicus. Replace when dry; stop when healed. Alternatively, apply mud from the bottom of a well to the epigastrium. Replace when dry.
Another formula:
Fuping (Lemnae Herba, dried), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Ge Fen (Concha Tridacnatis), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed, slightly stir-fried), Lan Gen (Isatidis Radix) (each 1 liang).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Mix with water and apply as a paste over the umbilicus. This formula calms the fetus and relieves irritability and heat; it is extremely effective.
Half of women suffer from head wind (tou feng). Each attack is accompanied by dizziness and vertigo, feeling as if on a moving vehicle. This is due to blood deficiency allowing wind pathogenic factors to invade the Liver. The *Su Wen* states: "Dizziness and blurred vision, deafness, emptiness above and excess below, the pathology lies in the Foot Shaoyang and Foot Jueyin meridians, and severely involves the Liver." This refers to this condition. I once prescribed this formula for others; it acts faster and more effectively than other medicines.
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang, washed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 fen, washed, remove radicle, slice thinly, dry in shade, weigh), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, washed, remove radicle), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Qu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fried), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove woody core), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata).
Grind all ingredients into powder. For each dose, take 2 qian, add one da zhan of water and five slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until three-tenths remain. Strain and take warm. No specific timing required.
There are three types of postpartum disorders in women. Yu Mao (depression and dizziness) leads to profuse sweating; profuse sweating leads to constipation, making medication difficult to administer. Only Mazisu Zi Zhou (Hemp Seed and Perilla Seed Porridge) is best and safest.
Take equal parts (half he) of Zisu Zi (Perillae Fructus) and Da Mazi (Cannabis Fructus). Wash thoroughly and grind to extreme fineness. Add water and grind again to extract one da zhan of juice. Divide into two portions and cook into porridge to consume. This porridge is suitable not only postpartum but also generally effective for the elderly suffering from various deficiencies and wind-induced constipation. Once, the mother of a nobleman, aged eighty-four, suddenly suffered from abdominal distension, headache, nausea, and loss of appetite. Her family was worried and fearful. After consuming two doses, she recovered.
