[Chu Ye San Formula]
White ram liver (take only one piece of the fetal liver, slice thinly, and dry by roasting on a new tile) Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, sprinkled with wine, steamed nine times and dried in the sun nine times, then baked and weighed to be 1.5 liang) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, soaked in water and dehearted), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, soaked in wine, dried in the sun, and ground into powder together with paper strips), Rui Ren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen Exocarpum), Jue Ming Zi (Cassiae Semen), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus). Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30-40 pills each time, washed down with warm water, three times a day, at any time.
Zhang Taiqing once suffered from dim vision. Physicians in the capital advised him to moxa the Ganshu (BL18) acupoint, which resulted in complete blindness. He then obtained this formula, took it, and his vision recovered. A man suffering from internal cataracts was treated ineffectively by doctors. I gave him the remaining portion of this prescription. One night by lamplight, he told his family: "I happened to see something just now, as if seeing fire through a crack in the door." By morning, upon examination, the pterygium or film in his eye had cracked like a thread. Zhang Zhongjing said: This medicine is efficacious; do not give it to others lightly, for neglecting it will render it ineffective. I felt my understanding was limited and wished to disseminate it widely.
[Juhua San Formula]
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, remove rhizome stump), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, wash), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos, remove stem, clean), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove wire-like rootlets, half liang each), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soak in rice water overnight, peel, weigh 1 liang each of the above), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos).
Grind the above herbs in a wooden mortar into powder. Take 2 qian mixed with clear tea liquor, once after breakfast and dinner, and once before bed.
This formula also treats acute red eye. Patients with red eyes should avoid wet noodles and alcohol. The Chu Ye (Broussonetiae Folium) must be truly leaf-only without fruit; otherwise, it is unsuitable. If not, all other medicines will be ineffective. During preparation, baking is prohibited, and contact with iron vessels must be avoided. In observing this formula, the selection of Chu Ye must be leaf-only without fruit. This is because Yin and Yang entities must correspond: fruit-bearing represents Yang, while leaf-only represents Yin.
[Formula for Treating Eye Pain Caused by Wind-Toxic Heat Rising from Liver and Kidney]
Treats eye pain caused by wind-toxic heat rising from the Liver and Kidney.
Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried until ripe, 8 liang each), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 3 liang, remove wire-like rootlets), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus, 1 liang, remove spines), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang, honey-fried).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with boiled water, taken after meals and before bed.
The *Su Wen* states: Prolonged viewing damages Blood. Blood is governed by the Liver; thus, diligent writing injures the Liver. The primary symptom is blurred vision. When the Liver is injured, wind generates internally. Heat rises to accumulate in the eyes, causing severe blurring. One should not exclusively take tonifying medicines; instead, one must take medicines that nourish Blood, calm the Liver, and brighten the eyes, such as Dihuang Wan.
