Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang) (sprinkled with wine, steamed nine times and sun-dried nine times, then dried and weighed at 1.5 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian) (1 liang, remove the rootlets), Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) (1 liang), Myrrha (Mo Yao) (separately ground), Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Ju Hua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng) (remove the woody core), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo) (remove the rhizome head), Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Xin) (avoid direct fire exposure), Purified Cinnabar (Guang Ming Zhu Sha) (each half liang, processed by water flotation).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wu zi (Cocculus trilobus seeds). Take 30 pills per dose with warm boiled water, after meals, three times daily.
Excessive reading harms the Liver and damages the eyes; this is indeed true. Fan Ning of the Jin Dynasty once suffered from severe eye pain and sought a prescription from Zhang Zhan. Zhang Zhan jokingly said, "In ancient times, Song Yangzi rarely had clear vision; he could only see objects beyond a distance of one chi." This is indeed a peculiar prescription. [Note: The original text contains apparent textual corruption or lacunae here regarding the efficacy or nature of the joke].
Two prescriptions for treating cold tears caused by Head Wind (Tou Feng), attributed to Pang Anchang.
Prescription 1:
Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Ju Hua), Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) (each 3 fen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo) (remove the rhizome head), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong) (wash), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin) (remove leaves), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi) (avoid direct fire exposure).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm water, after meals, three times daily.
Prescription 2:
Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong) (wash), Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Ju Hua), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin) (remove leaves), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi) (each 1 fen, avoid direct fire exposure).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Make pills with wax the size of millet seeds. At bedtime, insert two pills into each eye. Replace one pill every shi chen (two hours).
Xun Muzhong once told me: "A patient saw one object as two. Physicians diagnosed it as excess Liver Qi, causing diplopia, and prescribed Liver-tonifying herbs, but none were effective. This was due to deficiency in the Middle Jiao; they should have used Xi Jiao Sheng Ma Tang." Wang Jianzheng Xigao once suffered from pain between the nose bridge and forehead, sometimes accompanied by numbness and insensitivity, lasting for several years. Suddenly, the pain extended to the lips, Jiache acupoint, and hairline, all areas traversed by the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Top-grade Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao) (sliced, 1 liang 1 fen), True Chuan Shengma (Sheng Ma) (1 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng) (remove the woody core), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang Huo) (remove the rhizome head, each 3 fen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi) (avoid direct fire exposure), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) (remove the skin), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong) (wash), Typhonii Rhizoma (Bai Fu Zi) (processed, each half liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) (honey-fried, 1 fen).
Grind all ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose with 1.5 cups of water. Decoct until 0.8 cup remains, strain. Drink orally, after meals and before bed, three to four times daily.
The Foot-Yangming meridian belongs to the Stomach. The Classics state: "The intestines and stomach are like a market." It also states: "The Yangming channel has abundant blood and Qi." The Stomach accepts all flavors—fishy, greasy, pungent, sweet—like a market. This formula primarily clears heat and resolves Yangming pathogenic factors, which ascend to the vertex. Those with basic medical knowledge will understand.
For nasal congestion with clear discharge, caused by Cold in the Brain.
Akebia Caulis (Tong Cao), Magnolia Flower (Xin Yi) (each half liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin) (remove leaves), Kansui Radix (Gan Sui), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong), Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Xin) (avoid direct fire exposure), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fu Zi) (each 1 liang, processed, remove skin and navel).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Make pills wrapped in cotton with honey, insert into the nose. Seal tightly to prevent vapor leakage. Pill size like hemp seed. If slight pain is felt, mix with ginger paste to form pills, and it will heal.
This is a prescription from *Qianjin Fang*, treating conditions caused by Cold in the Brain. This condition can also be caused by Heat in the Brain or Cold in the Lung. The *Su Wen* states: "When Gallbladder heat transfers to the Brain, it forms Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis)." It also says: "Tears and mucus originate from the Brain; brain fluid渗 (seeps) out as mucus." It further states: "The fluid of the Lung is mucus." Their origins differ, so careful differentiation is required. Bi Yuan refers to continuous flow of turbid mucus, distinct from clear mucus.
