Treats stroke where the patient can speak, with no deviation of the mouth and eyes, but with dragging limbs. The pulse is deficient, floating, and rapid, indicating Wind striking the Fu organs (Yang organ channels). Generally, if Wind strikes the meridians, it causes deviation of the mouth and eyes; if Wind strikes the Fu organs, it leads to limb dysfunction; if Wind strikes the Zang organs (Yin organs), it endangers life. For Wind striking the Fu organs, it is appropriate to resolve the condition by inducing sweating. Use Xingfu San (Star-Attached Powder).
*Arisaema Cum Bile* (large ones) *Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum* (these two herbs sliced thinly, soaked through in ginger juice) *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata* (prepared until cracked, skin and navel removed) *Bellei Rhizoma* (prepared until slightly yellow)
*Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* (rhizome tip removed) *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma* *Poria* (skin removed, all in equal proportions)
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take two qian per dose, with one zhan of water and one zhan of wine, decoct together until reduced to eight fen, remove the dregs, and take hot. After two or three doses, sweating occurs and the condition improves. Previously in Tongcheng, someone suffered from this syndrome; after taking this medicine three times and sweating, their hands and feet could be lifted.
Treats constitutionally deficient individuals with Wind invasion, externally affected by Cold-Dampness, feeling as if floating in the air. Use Ersheng San (Two Raw Herbs Powder).
*Aconiti Radix* (raw, skin and navel removed) *Arismae Rhizoma* (raw, equal proportions)
Chop these two herbs. Take four da qian per dose, with one and a half zhan of water and ten slices of fresh ginger, decoct slowly over low heat until reduced to eight fen, remove the dregs, and take. In the year Wuwu, I had this illness in Xin'an. Dr. Zhang, a medical doctor, taught me this formula; after three doses, I recovered. (Note: If not cooked thoroughly, it has great toxicity, causing swelling and worsening the disease).
Treats sudden stroke coma resembling drunkenness, with a heavy and stifled body, inability to control the four limbs, Phlegm-Wind surging to the upper diaphragm, and Qi blockage preventing flow.
*Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina* (four pods, plump and uninfested, black skin removed) *Alumen* (bright quality, one liang)
Grind finely and mix evenly. For mild cases, take half a qian; for severe cases, take the amount held in three characters' spoonfuls. Mix with warm water and administer. It should not cause severe vomiting; once one or two sheng of cold phlegm flows out slightly, the patient will awaken. After awakening, treat gently and gradually; do not use strong tonics immediately, as this may overly damage the body. This is Sun Zhao's Formula.
Treats stroke with symptoms identical to the above.
*Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina* (two liang, crushed, mixed with one sheng of water and raw *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba*, pounded to extract juice, decocted slowly into a paste) *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba* (raw, half a jin)
*Cucumeris Melon Fructus* powder (one liang) *Veratri Radix* powder (one liang) *Cinnabaris* (half a liang)
Take one fen of *Cinnabaris* powder, mix evenly with the other two powders, and bind with the paste into pills the size of longan fruits. Coat with the remaining *Cinnabaris*. Dissolve one pill in warm wine and take; for severe cases, take two pills. The goal is to induce vomiting. Once vomited, the patient regains consciousness; if they do not regain consciousness after vomiting, the case is untreatable.
The *Bi Yong Fang* discusses that there is no vomiting method for stroke, citing Jin Hu Bi Xia as a warning. However, in cases of sudden violent phlegm production, sounds like sawing, locked jaw, and blocked Qi where decoctions cannot enter, and life hangs in the balance, is it acceptable to insist on no vomiting method? One simply should not use mercury-containing drugs, as they may damage the spleen and ruin the limbs. I have used these two formulas every time, and they are always effective.
