Treats Kidney Qi attacking upwards, causing stiffness in the neck and back preventing turning.
Large Aconite Root (Da Fu Zi, one piece, weighing more than six qian, processed, skin and navel removed, ground into powder)
Take two large qian of the above powder for each dose, combine with twenty grains of Sichuan Pepper (Hao Chuan Jiao), fill with white flour, add one and a half bowls of water and seven slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to seventy percent volume, remove the pepper, add salt, and take orally on an empty stomach. A relative of mine suffered from pain in the neck tendons extending to the shoulder blade, unable to turn; various wind-dispelling medicines were ineffective. I recalled a syndrome in *Qian Jin Fang* where Kidney Qi attacks causing stiffness in the back and neck, so I prescribed this formula to him. After two doses, he recovered instantly. Since then, it has been effective for others. This is because Kidney Qi ascends from the waist along the spine to the Caoxi acupoint, then enters the Niwang Palace. The Caoxi acupoint cannot be penetrated unless one is proficient in internal alchemy transport. Now, with retrograde flow blocked here, using pepper to guide the Qi back to its meridian brings peace. Xiao (Solemn) Qi reaches upward, while pepper directs downward. The *Classic of Poetry* states: "Jiao liao qie, yi wo wo jiao" (The pepper bush is lush, offering me a handful of peppers). All these refer to this meaning.
The Caoxi acupoint is the Fengfu acupoint (Fengfu, GV16), located one cun above the posterior hairline within the depression of the major tendon. It treats headache and neck stiffness, inability to look back. Needle insertion depth is three fen; moxibustion is strictly contraindicated, as improper use may unfortunately cause loss of voice. In Daoist internal alchemy, there is a diagram of the Double Passes of the Spine, directing essence and Qi in reverse flow to converge at the Niwang Palace. The Niwang Palace is the crown of the head, named Baihui acupoint (Baihui, GV20), which is the first [of the upper orifices].
