Pregnant women often experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, and loss of appetite. *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) refers to this condition as Ezu (Morning Sickness). This syndrome is common in those with weak Stomach Qi accompanied by Qi stagnation, or those who crave sour foods and are picky eaters, or who suffer from limb fatigue, irritability, and distension; these are all its manifestations. However, there are differences between deficiency and excess patterns, which must be differentiated for treatment.
Generally, Ezu is caused by Stomach deficiency and Qi stagnation. However, some individuals who were not originally deficient may suddenly conceive, causing the Qi of the Chong and Ren vessels to surge upward without descending, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and reversal of Qi. Why does vomiting gradually cease after three months? It is because as the fetal origin grows larger, the Qi of the Zang-Fu organs is solely dedicated to nourishing the fetus, leaving no surplus to rebel upward. In treating this condition, it is appropriate to use formulas such as Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) or Renshen Jupi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction), adjusting according to circumstances to bring gradual peace, until the time of delivery approaches, when stability can be achieved. If there is excessive phlegm in the epigastrium, use Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with added Zhike (Aurantium Fructus) or Banxia Fuling Tang. If distension is caused by food stagnation, Xiaohesh Yin (Minor Harmonizing Decoction) should be modified and used as the main treatment. If distension is caused by rebellious Qi, Banxia Fuling Tang with added Zhike, Sugen (Perilla Stem), and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) is suitable. If there is Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Yigong Powder), Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction), or Renshen Jupi Tang are suitable. If there is Stomach deficiency combined with Cold and frequent vomiting, Liuwei Yigong Jian (Six-Ingredient Yigong Decoction) or Wenwei Yin (Warming the Stomach Infusion) are suitable. If vomiting is caused by Kidney and Liver Yang deficiency, Liyin Jian (Nourishing Yin Decoction) is suitable.
Xue Lizhai stated: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is the principal herb for strengthening Spleen Qi and resolving phlegmatic stagnation. In cases of Spleen and Stomach weakness with vomiting, or phlegm-saliva obstruction, poor appetite, and fetal instability, Fuling Banxia Tang (Poria and Pinellia Decoction) must be used, with doubled Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). This is because Banxia, Baizhu, Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Sharen (Amomi Fructus) are effective in calming the fetus and strengthening the Spleen and Stomach. I have frequently used this method with verified efficacy.
