Zhang Jingyue said: Stroke is a syndrome where the pathology lies in the Blood aspect, mostly belonging to the Liver Meridian. The Liver governs Wind-Wood, hence named Stroke. Why have experts since Tang and Song dynasties placed such emphasis on "Wind," thus frequently using dispersing and releasing exterior medicines? Those who suffer from this illness all do so due to internal injury, originally without external contraction. Since there is no external contraction, treating it with dispersing methods accelerates danger. If it is due to stagnation of Qi and Blood, slightly assisting with acrid-warm herbs to promote circulation through collaterals is acceptable; however, regarding it as Wind pathogen and insisting on inducing sweat for dispersion is inadvisable. If among them there are cases combined with exterior pathogens, these formulas cannot be discarded. Therefore, I have selected the important ones and recorded them in detail, merely to preserve the methods of the ancients.
