Changsun Jun's Acupuncture Method for Masses (Ji Kuai): First, needle the area of the mass. If the condition is severe, insert one needle at the head of the mass and another at the tail. Afterward, apply moxibustion; immediate results are expected.
Another method states: Whenever treating Pi syndrome (subcostal fullness/mass) with moxibustion, one must moxa the "Pi Gen" point; there will be no failure in efficacy. The method for locating this point is as follows: mark a dot on the midline of the spine below the thirteenth thoracic vertebra. This marked spot is not the acupoint itself. Instead, measure three and a half cun laterally from both sides of the mark. Palpate with fingers until a slight arterial pulsation is felt; mark this spot for moxibustion. The point is approximately level with the umbilicus. Moxa the left side predominantly, or both sides; this constitutes the Pi Gen point. Alternatively, if the pathology is on the left, moxa the right, and vice versa; this is also effective.
First, the Moxibustion Acupoint Method: Zhongwan (CV12), Qimen (LR14), Zhangmen (LR13), Pishu (BL20), Sanjiaoshu (BL22), Tonggu (BL39). These are suitable acupoints for moxibustion for various types of Pi syndrome.
For Ji Pi (accumulated cold-phlegm masses) located in the upper jiao, it is appropriate to moxa: Shangwan (CV13), Zhongwan (CV12), Qimen (LR14), Zhangmen (LR13), etc. For masses located in the lower jiao, it is appropriate to moxa: Tianshu (ST25), Zhangmen (LR13), Shenshu (BL23), Qihai (CV6), Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongji (CV3), Shuidao (ST28), etc. In general, the principle of moxibustion is to treat the upper part before the lower part. For abdominal moxibustion, the size of the moxa cone should be slightly larger. Start with seven moxa cones (zhuang) or fourteen, and gradually increase the number thereafter; the more, the better. All the aforementioned acupoints can treat Pi syndrome; select them according to the situation. However, there are cases where fixed acupoints cannot be strictly followed. For the hardest part of the mass, or its head, tail, protruding areas, or areas with pulsation, observe the meridian pathways involved. Moxa these specific locations comprehensively. Where the heat energy reaches, the condensed pathogenic qi will naturally dissipate gradually, possessing miraculous transformative effects. Nevertheless, the method of moxaing Pi syndrome does not guarantee success in a single session. One must alternate between selected key points, repeating the process two or three times, and applying moxibustion continuously over time; recovery is inevitable.
