[Da Fu Pi (Areca Nut Pericarp)]
Pungent, astringent, warm, slightly toxic. The Zhen bird often gathers on this tree. It should be washed with wine first, then washed again with mung bean soup. The coarse internal part should be removed, as it consumes Qi.
[Invention/Commentary]
Bing Lang (Areca Seed) has a heavy nature and resolves tangible accumulations; Da Fu Pi has a light and floating nature and disperses intangible stagnant Qi. Therefore, it is suitable for conditions such as chest fullness and distension, edema due to water retention, and swelling with counterflow associated with Hong Kong Foot (Jiao Qi). However, it is strictly contraindicated in cases of deficiency-type abdominal distension, because it drains true Qi.
[Ma Bing Lang (Wild Areca)]
Bitter, sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
Ma Bing Lang grows in the barbarian regions of southern Yunnan and is not included in decoctions. For febrile diseases, eat several pieces and swallow with cold water. For swollen toxins and malignant sores, chew one piece and apply it to the swollen area. In cases of difficult labor, chew several pieces finely temporarily and swallow with flower water; delivery occurs almost immediately. Take four more pieces, remove the shells, and hold two in each hand; foul lochia will discharge naturally. To prevent pregnancy, chew two pieces regularly; over time, the uterus becomes cold and conception ceases.
[Wu Hua Gu (Fig)]
Fruit: Sweet, neutral. Leaves: Slightly pungent, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
Wu Hua Gu originates from Yunnan, and is also abundant in Yangzhou. Nowadays, people in Wu, Chu, Min, and Yue regions propagate it by cutting branches and inserting them into the soil. The branches resemble those of the Loquat tree. Leaves emerge in March; fruits appear in May without flowers. The fruit grows among the branches, resembling a wooden steamed bun. When ripe, it is purple, soft, and mushy, tasting like a persimmon but without seeds. Eating it opens the appetite and stops diarrhea, treating sore throat. The leaves treat painful swelling of the five types of hemorrhoids; decoct them and frequently fumigate and wash the affected area.
[Zhi Ju Zi (Calamus Fruit / Hovenia Dulcis Seed)]
Also known as Ji Ju Zi, commonly called Mi Qu Lv.
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
Zhi Ju is the seed of the Jin Gou tree. The Materia Medica states only that this wood can spoil wine; if this tree grows outside a house, wine brewed inside will be poor quality. Zhu Danxi often used its fruit to treat alcohol-related diseases. It can also quench thirst, relieve irritability, clear heat from the diaphragm, moisten the five zang organs, and promote urination and defecation. Excessive consumption may trigger roundworms, because its great sweetness aids the transformation of damp-heat.
[Xi Gua (Watermelon)]
Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
The flesh of Xi Gua is red and sweet. It guides heat from the Pericardium to drain downward through the Small Intestine and Bladder. Because it acquires Metal Qi from the West during the Sanfu days (the hottest period), it can resolve Shaoyang and Yangming exterior syndromes, as well as excessive thirst caused by febrile diseases, earning it the title "Natural Bai Hu Tang" (White Tiger Decoction). However, for epidemic febrile diseases arising from latent heat in spring and summer, eating stored watermelons from the previous year acts like pouring hot water on snow, resolving the heat rapidly. Consequently, physicians often use it to treat complex cases of winter Cold Damage or damaged diseases with vexation and thirst, yet rarely see cures. This is truly due to ignorance of celestial timing and the principles of latent heat eruption. Recently, imported watermelons ripen in May, eliminating the need to seek stored ones. Such is the difference brought about by changing times.
