(Bai Shiying / White Quartz) Sweet and warm, non-toxic. Originates from Mount Tai. The genuine variety is characterized by six edges, being crystal clear and white like rock crystal. Mr. Lin Beihai, in his *Bibei Bencao Gangmu* (Must-Read Compendium of Materia Medica), only recorded Zi Shiying but omitted Bai Shiying; it can be known that true Bai Shiying is rare in the world today.
The *Shennong Benjing* (Classic of Divine Husbandman's Materia Medica) states it treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst / Diabetes), Yin Wei Bu Zu (Insufficiency of Impotence), Ke Ni (Cough and Qi Reversal), Jiu Han in the Chest and Diaphragm (Chronic Cold in the Thoracic Region), and benefits Qi while dispelling Feng Shi Bi (Wind-Dampness Bi Syndrome).
[Invention] Bai Shiying enters the Qi aspect of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It is suitable for cases of Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) that have ulcerated for a long time, or Wei Bi (Flaccidity and Bi Syndrome) where one cannot rise. The *Shennong Benjing* primarily addresses Xiao Ke, Yin Wei Bu Zu, and other conditions; its efficacy is undoubtedly specialized in warming the Lungs. However, mineral drugs possess a fierce and aggressive nature and should not be taken for a long time. In Zhang Zhongjing’s *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet), the Feng Yin Tang (Wind-Driving Decoction) only requires crushing the mineral into rice-grain size, avoiding the dregs entering the stomach. In the *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), formulas such as Wu Shi Fang all undergo water-flying processing before being made into pills. Specifically, Wu Shi Wan (Five Minerals Pill) uses Zhong Ru (Stalactite) as the sovereign herb, combined with Zi Shiying, Bai Shiying, Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite), and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum). This combination specifically warms the Zang organs' Qi. Shi Gao clears Stomach Heat to resolve the aggressive nature of the various minerals. Moreover, since they have undergone water-flying processing, there is no need to worry about dregs remaining in the middle jiao and generating heat.
(Zi Shiying / Purple Quartz) Sweet and warm, non-toxic. Originates from Mount Tai. The best quality has five edges, is bright and deep purple in color, and forms large chunks. Those produced in Zhejiang, although smaller in chunk size, can also be used medicinally. Heating over fire generates toxicity; it must be ground to an extremely fine powder and processed via water-flying three times. Li Shizhen stated: "Quench seven times in vinegar, then use after water-flying," which is incorrect.
The *Shennong Benjing* states it treats Xin Fu Ke Ni Xie Qi (Cough, Qi Reversal, and Pathogenic Factors in the Heart and Abdomen), tonifies insufficiency, and addresses cases in women where Feng Han (Wind-Cold) resides in the Zi Gong (Uterus), causing infertility for ten years.
[Invention] Zi Shiying enters the Blood aspect of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Ascending, it calms the Heart, settles palpitations, stabilizes the Hun and Po (Soul and Corporeal Soul), and controls rebellious Qi, utilizing its heavy nature to dispel timidity. Descending, it benefits the Liver, fills the Lower Jiao, dissipates Yin Fire, and stops Xiao Ke, utilizing its warm nature to warm the Blood. It is suitable for women with menstrual obstruction, pale blood color, and infertility. Regarding the *Shennong Benjing*'s treatment of women with Wind-Cold in the Uterus leading to ten years of infertility, taking this herb enables conception. This is not merely due to strong tonification but also verifies its ability to dissipate turbid Yin stagnation. If the blood is hot and dark purple, it is contraindicated because of its warm nature. The *Qianjin Fang* states that women seeking beauty should not take Zi Shiying, as it causes the complexion to darken; does this not refer to its property of warming the blood? Therefore, for women suffering from infertility due to Yin Deficiency with Hyperactive Fire, who are unable to secure essence, Zi Shiying is contraindicated.
