[Tie Jing (Iron Essence)]
Nature is neutral and slightly warm, with slight toxicity.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* records that it brightens the eyes and dissolves copper.
[Invention]
This is the essence of iron. It comes from the forge, and those that are purple and light as dust are considered superior, utilizing its nature of extreme yin and heaviness. Having been refined by pure yang fire, it becomes light and floats upward; therefore, it can treat palpitations due to fright, calm wind epilepsy (epileptic disorders characterized by convulsions), and break up stagnant blood in the epigastrium causing pain. *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it brightens the eyes, taking advantage of its meaning to suppress and secure deficient fire, because it contains much fire qi. However, for those with deficiency-cold of the stomach qi, taking it often carries the risk of loss of appetite and hiccups; this is because the excessive suppression by pure yin damages the harmonious qi of yang.
[Tie Yi (Iron Rust)]
Pungent, cold, non-toxic.
[Invention]
Tao Hua said: Mixing iron rust with water and administering it as medicine, its nature is heavy, capable of best sinking heat and opening knots, and also calming the Liver and reducing swelling. It treats malignant sores and scabies, applied mixed with oil. For postpartum uterine prolapse, mix with Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) and apply as a powder suspended in water. For bites from earwigs or centipedes, apply mixed with garlic.
[Yunmu (Muscovite)]
Nature is bland, temperature is neutral, non-toxic.
[Invention]
Yuxie (Jade powder) can eliminate scars; if rubbed daily, they will gradually recede over time. After grinding into fine powder and processing by wet milling (Shuifei - adding water to grind and settle the finest particles), it can remove nebulae (corneal opacities). Coral, agate, gemstones, glass, and rock crystal ground into powder and processed by wet milling can all remove nebulae, not just jade powder.
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. When using Yunmu, select those that are white and translucent, break them into thin slices, soak in rainwater or running water to remove sand and dirt, then soak in autumn dew for dozens of days, boil together with dew for seven days and nights, grind until extremely fine, and rub between fingers until no longer lustrous, before it is usable. Alternatively, place it in a heavy cloth bag with salt, pour water until the salty taste is completely gone, hang in a windy place to naturally dry into powder. Tao Hongjing said: Refining it with Mingfan (Alumen) makes it easy to knead; Yangxue (Sheep's Blood) is contraindicated because it can neutralize the properties of various medicines. It is strictly forbidden to use with Husuan (Wild Garlic); doing so will inevitably cause abdominal distension and diarrhea. Black Yunmu is toxic and harmful. *Shennong Bencao Jing* indicates it treats body Bi syndrome (obstruction causing pain/numbness) and dead muscle (necrotic tissue), wind-stroke with alternating chills and fever feeling like being on a rocking boat, dispels evil qi, calms the Five Zang organs, benefits essence and brightens the eyes, and long-term use makes the body light and extends longevity.
[Invention]
Yunmu grows in the valleys of Mount Tai; those that are white are of good quality. *Shennong Bencao Jing* says Yunmu is sweet and neutral; analyzing its ascending nature, it should also have the power of sweet-warmness to assist yang, thus it can repel all kinds of abnormal yin-evil qi, treating body Bi syndrome and dead muscle because it expels evil and removes yin toxins. It treats wind-stroke with alternating chills and fever feeling like being on a rocking boat because it stabilizes and secures deficient yang. The Yunmu Gao (Ointment) in *Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Bureau) treats all kinds of carbuncles and toxins. Zhang Zhongjing's formulas treat Pinmie (a type of malaria characterized by more chills than fever). *Qianjin Fang* treats chronic dysentery with leukorrhea, strangury (painful/difficult urination), and all kinds of malignant sores. *Shenshi Fang* treats headache due to phlegm-fluid retention. He Deyang treated difficult labor in women, mixing three qian with warm wine for oral administration; delivery occurred immediately upon ingestion. Applied externally to knife wounds, it stops bleeding fastest and without the risk of putrefaction. It is also widely used for Yin abscesses and intestinal abscesses, all utilizing its power to assist yang. Long-term use can make the body light and lead to Shijie (Daoist concept of shedding the physical body to ascend). Sun Simiao frequently took it, but since mineral drugs tend to bias towards assisting yang, those with yin deficiency and flaming fire must be cautious not to take it mistakenly.
