*Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) names it "Shuzhe," while *Bielu* (Supplementary Records of Famous Physicians) names it "Jiegu."
(Xuduan, Dipsaci Radix) Bitter, slightly warm, non-toxic. Remove the root end and tail, stir-fry with wine before use.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats internal injury and tonifies insufficiency, golden wounds (metal-induced trauma) and carbuncles, fractures and dislocations, and continues sinews and bones. For women's difficulty in lactation, long-term consumption boosts qi and strength.
[Invention] Xuduan enters the Liver meridian to continue sinews and bones, serving as the premier herb for women's gestational and postpartum metrorrhagia (abnormal uterine bleeding). It also treats diseases of the Dai vessel (Girdle Vessel), long-term consumption boosts qi and strength, benefits joints, treats lower back pain, warms the uterus, heals golden wounds and fractures, dissipates carbuncle swelling and blood stasis, and treats women's difficulty in lactation. The treatments for internal injury and insufficiency mentioned in *Shennong Bencao Jing* generally derive their efficacy from harmonizing blood and unblocking meridians. It can also stop frequent urination and treat seminal emission. In ancient prescriptions for bloody dysentery, one liang of Pingwei San combined with three qian of Xuduan are ground into powder; taking three qian per dose, decocted in water, results in immediate cure. Is this not a case where the name matches the reality?
*Shennong Bencao Jing* names it "Yelan."
(Loulu, Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba) Bitter, salty, cold, toxic.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats skin heat toxins, malignant sores and abscesses, hemorrhoidal fistulas and bi-syndrome, and promotes lactation.
[Invention] Loulu is bitter and cold, capable of detoxification, and acts on the Foot-Yangming Meridian. *Shennong Bencao Jing* treats heat toxins and malignant sores, and promotes lactation, because it can open orifices. It is a key herb for disinfection, pus drainage, and killing parasites. In ancient prescriptions for carbuncles and back abscesses, Loulu Tang is highly praised. This is likely because saltiness softens hardness, and coldness resolves toxins. Therefore, ingestion inevitably causes diarrhea, allowing pathogens to exit through the bowels. In the past, when treating infant skin infections, mothers were instructed to take this herb so its properties would pass through breast milk, often causing infants to suffer from diarrhea with white froth, severely damaging primordial qi. Thus, it is unsuitable for those with qi deficiency or sores that fail to suppurate, and is strictly contraindicated for pregnant women.
(Zhuma, Boehmeriae Niveae Folium) Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Invention] Zhuma specifically moves stagnant blood; placing it under a pillow treats postpartum blood syncope. For postpartum abdominal pain, placing Zhuma on the abdomen stops the pain. Soaking Zhuma in water treats heat-thirst, and the root treats pediatric erysipelas (red dan). Huangma (Yellow Hemp) is bitter and warm, specifically dispersing old blood stasis; taking aged Huangma, calcined to ash while retaining its nature, and taken with wine. Luoma root calcined to ash is miraculously effective for treating throat-lock wind (a condition characterized by severe throat swelling and obstruction).
