That is Honghua (Carthamus tinctorius).
Acrid, warm, non-toxic.
Invention: Blood is generated by the Pericardium, stored in the Liver, and belongs to the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); the juice of Honghua is of the same category as blood. Therefore, it can circulate the blood vessels of men, unblock the menstrual water of women, invigorate blood, resolve toxin from smallpox, and dissipate red swelling. For postpartum blood fainting and fetus dying in the womb, it is suitable to take it with the urine of a healthy child. In small doses, it nourishes blood; in large doses, it moves blood. Overuse causes continuous bleeding, and its nature tends to ascend upward; this must be known. It also treats lower bleeding caused by Gu poison (parasitic disease), can be used to make rouge, treats ear diseases in children, and resolves toxic swelling from smallpox carbuncles. For postpartum blood stagnation (Qi blockage due to blood stasis), boil ten jin (approx. 5 kg) of Honghua in water, place the liquid in a barrel, position the woman horizontally above the barrel's cross-bar, and fumigate her with the steam. Reheat when cool, and after half a day, she will regain consciousness.
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. There are four types of rouge: one type is made by dyeing Hu Fen (lead carbonate powder) with the juice of Honglan Hua (Carthamus tinctorius flower); another is made by dyeing powder with the juice of Shanyanzi Flower; another is made with the juice of Shanniu Flower (Pomegranate flower); and another is made by dyeing cotton with Zikuang juice (Lac resin). All can be used as adjuvants for medicines treating blood disorders. Additionally, seeds of Abutilon indicum can have their juice extracted and mixed with powder to make facial grease, but they are not used medicinally. The residue of Zikuang is called Huoqi (Fire Lacquer), which craftsmen use by adding water.
Invention: Rouge is red and can serve as a blood-invigorating medicine. To treat hardened muscle tissue in smallpox sores, decoct Mian Yanzhi (Cotton Rouge) with Zicao (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma) in water, and frequently wipe the affected area with the hot rouge while it is still warm; gradually it softens and allows the eruption of smallpox pustules. Furthermore, to prevent smallpox from affecting the eyes, when using Huang Gao (Yellow Ointment), mix it with You Yanzhi (Oil Rouge) for topical application, thus preventing the smallpox from invading the eyes.
The flowers are sweet and warm; the roots are slightly cool, non-toxic.
Invention: Both Daji (Cirsii Japonici Herba) and Xiaoji (Cirsii setani Herba) can break blood stasis. The root of Daji mainly treats leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge) in women, stops hematemesis (vomiting blood) and epistaxis (nosebleed); it is cool yet moving, moving yet tonifying, and also treats carbuncles and swellings. The root of Xiaoji specializes in breaking blood stasis but cannot reduce swelling; it has the merit of removing old blood and generating new blood, and is used for hematemesis and metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), but its power is weak, capable only of clearing heat, unlike Daji which can break stasis and dissipate toxins. "Dan Fang" (Prescription Formulas) treats persistent hematemesis by taking one dose of Xiaoji, Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), which stops bleeding immediately. This method contains purgative action within hemostasis, representing an excellent approach among drastic remedies. Modern physicians mostly use its flowers, primarily seeking the meaning of dispersing blood. However, their nature is descending; therefore, those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, diarrhea, and poor appetite should avoid using them.
