Is rapeseed.
Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Invention] Yun Tai (Brassica napus) breaks blood stasis; therefore, it is suitable for postpartum women to consume, but only if stored for a long time, thus avoiding the risk of diarrhea. Those with old cases of Hongxiangjiao (Hong Kong foot, characterized by swelling and pain in the feet) should not eat it. People with fox odor (body malodor) should not eat it, as consumption will exacerbate the condition. For Youfeng Dansheng (a skin condition involving wind-induced redness, swelling, and heat), fresh leaves are crushed and applied topically with divine efficacy. If leaves are unavailable, seeds may be used as a substitute. After recovery from epidemic diseases, one must avoid all raw vegetables, lest they cause swelling of the hands and feet. The oil pressed from its seeds is called Xiangyou (sesame-like oil). When insects appear in carbuncles, sores, or hemorrhoidal fistulas, applying this oil eliminates them completely. Dripping it into holes bored by worms in cured meat kills the insects instantly, demonstrating its potent vermifuge properties.
Pungent, warm, slightly toxic.
[Invention] Phlegm lodged in the hypochondrium or within the subcutaneous fascia cannot reach these areas without this herb. Kongxian Dan (Control Saliva Pill) uses Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed) precisely for this purpose. Pungency enters the Lung meridian, and warmth disperses exterior pathogens; thus, it possesses the functions of regulating Qi, resolving phlegm, dissipating nodules, reducing swelling, and warding off foul odors. In the past, a patient suffering from hypochondriac pain who failed to respond to various treatments was cured after consuming mustard greens paste, coincidentally aligning with the effect of dissipating nodules and opening phlegm. Its use in treating Shegong Zhuqi (infection by external toxic qi), Shangqi (rebellious Qi causing asthma), and inducing sweating relies on its pungent dispersion to expel toxins. Although a common daily food, excessive consumption blurs vision, stirs internal fire, depletes Qi, and damages Jing (Essence). It is strictly contraindicated for those with Heat in the Lung meridian or hyperactive Deficient Fire. Chen Nian Xian Jie Lu (aged salty mustard brine) treats Fei Yong (Lung Abscess); vomiting out foul sputum and turbid toxins leads to cure, but it is only suitable for early-stage abscesses before ulceration.
Also known as Manjing, i.e., Zhuge Cai.
Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
[Invention] Manjing treats Heat-Toxin Wind Swelling and Ru Yong (Acute Mastitis) accompanied by aversion to cold and fever. Crushed raw with a little salt and applied topically, changing it when it feels hot, cures the condition in three to five applications. Its seeds brighten the eyes. The Mianzhi (Facial Cosmetics) formula in *Qianjin Fang* (*Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold*) uses it to make the complexion fair and radiant. However, it should not be consumed long-term, as it causes Qi distension.
Pungent, sweet, neutral, slightly warm, non-toxic. There are many varieties of its seeds; those planted in spring and harvested in summer, which are small and dark-colored, are superior. It is contraindicated for persons taking Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) and Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root).
[Invention] Fuzi (Radish Seed) has the power to push down walls and overturn buildings in treating Phlegm, excelling in regulating Qi. Raw Fuzi ascends, while cooked Fuzi descends. Ascending action induces vomiting of Wind-Phlegm; descending action calms Phlegm-Cough. Both are effects of regulating Qi. Combined with Suzi (Perilla Seed) and Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed) to form Sanzi San (Three Seeds Powder), it treats Phlegm-Asthma and Chest Fullness. Its root: raw acts ascending, cooked acts descending. Raw root breaks Blood and resolves Phlegm; cooked root generates Phlegm and aids Dampness. Fresh Radish Juice treats severe burns caused by fire; administering it revives the patient. For contusions and injuries resulting in cyanosis and swelling, crushed radish applied topically dissipates the bruising. Cooked radish rubbed on frostbite heals within two to three days. For Hemicephalic Headache (one-sided headache), take about half an inch of the green part near the stem, crush it to extract juice, and drip into the nostril opposite the pain (left pain into right nostril, right pain into left nostril; if both sides hurt, drip into both). Lie down for a moment after dripping, once daily. Within six or seven days, recurrence will cease permanently. To turn hair white, mix one liter of Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Juice) with one liter of Sheng Lifu Zhi (Fresh Radish Juice) and drink; this verifies its blood-damaging nature. For Xia'er Danliu Youfeng (pediatric erysipelas/wind-swelling), crushed radish applied topically reduces swelling and can detoxify Fuzi (Aconite). Its nature is most likely to consume Qi and damage Blood; therefore, it is forbidden for those with Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold and indigestion. *Dan Fang* (*Prescription Manual*) takes the seedlings and leaves, dried in shade, to treat Dysentery, selected based on stool color: red stools are treated with brown sugar, white stools with rock sugar. This is only suitable for acute dysentery. For chronic dysentery with Stomach Deficiency and aversion to food, it must not be used.
