It is Dilong (Earthworm).
Salty, cold in nature, with slight toxicity. The white-necked variety is superior.
It resolves heat toxins; for this purpose, it is mixed with salt and liquefied into water.
It unblocks the meridians; for this purpose, it is dried by roasting.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states that it treats snake abdominal masses (Shejia), expels the three parasites, Fu Shi (hidden accumulation diseases), Gui Zhu (ghostly infections), Gu poison, and kills long worms (intestinal parasites).
[Invention]
Among creatures, the earthworm corresponds to the virtue of Earth; among stars, it corresponds to Zhen Water. Although its body is lowly and prone to crouching, its nature is good at burrowing and penetrating. It specializes in killing snakes, insects, the three parasites, and various poisons associated with Fu Shi.
It resolves damp-heat, treats jaundice, promotes urination, and unblocks the meridians. Therefore, Huoluo Wan (Meridian-Activating Pill) uses it as the sovereign herb.
Dilong Tang (Earthworm Decoction) is used to treat smallpox. When spleen and kidney deficiency heat causes a delicate red complexion, and after five or six days the lesions become dry, purple, and sink inward, mixing the earthworm with water chestnut (Biqie), pounded together, and taken with fermented rice wine can cause immediate recovery.
If the lesions are dark purple, dull, and have hard skin, this indicates blood heat in the liver and spleen. In such cases, Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Zicao (Arnebia Root), and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) should be used immediately for clearing and resolving heat and cooling blood; earthworm is not suitable here.
For warm diseases presenting with high fever and delirium/raving, or epidemic high fever, mixing it with human urine, pounding, and squeezing out the juice for administration allows the heat toxin to exit via urination.
It is also suitable for sudden urinary retention and obstruction.
When placed in green onions until liquefied, it treats sudden deafness.
Salty, cold in nature, with slight toxicity.

Agriolimax (slug) and snails are born in damp places and emerge during rainy weather; they belong to the category of extreme Yin.
They treat various swelling toxins and hemorrhoidal fistulas, and counteract the toxicity of centipedes and scorpions. Pounded into a paste and applied topically, their efficacy lies in resolving heat and detoxifying.
Those that are small, pointed, and climb on mulberry trees are called Yuansang Luo (Mulberry-climbing Snail).
To treat rectal prolapse, applying them mixed with pig fat causes immediate retraction.
These shells are found on all kinds of trees, but only those from mulberry trees are selected, similar to the rationale for using Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case).
Sweet, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
The sticky, white ones are superior.
The red ones require water-calcination (Fei). If not calcined finely enough, they will stick to the stomach and intestines, causing alternating chills and fever.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states that it treats heart and abdominal ghostly infections, ancient spirits/monsters, cough with reverse flow, dysentery with pus and blood, leukorrhea in women, Zheng Jia (masses) with firm consolidation, and pediatric heat-induced convulsions.
[Invention]
Astringency can prevent collapse. Longgu (Dragon Bone) enters the liver to anchor the soul and astringe floating and hyperactive Qi.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats heart and abdominal ghostly infections and spirit-related diseases because its spiritual nature can repel evil qi.
Its treatment of cough with reverse flow, dysentery with pus and blood, and leukorrhea in women utilizes its astringent property to consolidate the upper and lower Qi and Blood.
Although its nature is astringent, it can enter the liver to break up stagnation; Zheng Jia (masses) with firm consolidation are blood accumulations in the liver meridian.
Pediatric heat-induced convulsions are also diseases of the liver meridian. When combined with Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), the power to dispel pathogens and subdue the liver is particularly swift.
Xu Hong stated: Calculus Bovis dislikes Longgu, but Longgu becomes more effective when combined with Calculus Bovis, due to the mutual restraint.
Its nature collects the Yin within Yang. It specifically travels through the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and additionally enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
It treats nocturnal emissions during dreams, excessive dreaming, somnolence with spermatorrhea, epistaxis, hematemesis, fetal bleeding, and intestinal wind. It benefits the kidney and calms the heart, serving as an essential herb for consolidating essence and Qi.
If there are external pathogenic factors, it should be used in combination with exterior-releasing herbs.
Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing treated Taiyang syndrome where fire therapy caused Yang collapse, palpitations, and mania, using Jiuni Tang (Rescue Collapse Decoction); for conditions resulting from improper downward purgation following fire therapy, there are corresponding formulas. For restlessness caused by burning needles, there is Guizhi Gancao Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction). For Shaoyang syndrome complicated by palpitations and irritability due to improper purgation, there is Chaihu Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction).
The *Jingui Yaolue* treats consumptive disease with loss of essence using Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell).
The *Qianjin Fang* administers it with Yuanzhi (Polygala Root) and wine to treat forgetfulness and palpitations.
Made into honey pills coated with Cinnabar, it treats mental exhaustion leading to nocturnal seminal emission.
The *Meishi Fang* uses Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case) powder taken with salt water (2 qian) to treat enuresis and dribbling.
It also treats Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel) diseases, such as uncontrollable metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, abdominal fullness, and a sensation of sitting in water in the waist.
When added to astringent herbs, it stops Yin malaria, absorbs dampness, treats intermittent dysentery, chronic dysentery with rectal prolapse, and promotes tissue regeneration and wound healing.
However, if the astringent effect is too strong, it must not be recklessly administered to patients with chronic dysentery and Qi collapse. Misuse in cases of essence loss due to excess fire often leads to reddish, painful, and difficult urination, causing further inability to retain essence.
