*Ben Jing* (Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica) calls it Bai Shi (White Stone).
Salty and warm, non-toxic. The genuine product is white in color and feels soft like cotton when rubbed without being brittle; those that are hard and brittle are fake. For medicinal use, quench it seven times in distilled liquor, pound it into fine powder, and process it by water flotation (shui fei).
*Ben Jing* states it treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea with bleeding (beng zhong lou xia), breaks up blood stasis in the uterus, dissipates masses (zheng jia) and qi stagnation, treats abdominal pain due to alternating cold and heat, infertility, impotence, and tonifies deficiencies.
[Invention] Yang Qi Shi (Calcium Silicate Mineral) is the root of Muscovite (Yun Mu). It is a herb for the Right Kidney and Ming Men (Gate of Vitality) and is suitable for patients with deficiency-cold in the lower jiao. It is used in Hei Xi Dan (Black Tin Pill) precisely to tonify insufficient yang qi of the Ming Men. *Ben Jing* treats metrorrhagia because yang qi is deficient and unable to control yin blood. It also mentions breaking up blood stasis in the uterus and dissipating masses and qi stagnation, which refers to the accumulation of yin pathogens. Using the salty and warm nature of Yang Qi Shi can disperse the accumulated pathogen, thereby calming and harmonizing the uterus, allowing conception to occur naturally. It is contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with hyperactive fire because its nature specifically assists yang.
*Ben Jing* calls it Xuan Shi (Black Stone), commonly known as Magnetite (Xi Tie Shi).
Pungent and salty, slightly cold, non-toxic. For medicinal use, quench it seven times in vinegar, grind it into fine powder, and process it by water flotation.
*Ben Jing* states it treats generalized bi syndrome (zhou bi) and wind-dampness, pain in the limbs and joints, inability to hold objects, a sensation of cold and soreness/weakness, removes severe heat, fullness, and deafness.
[Invention] Ci Shi (Magnetite) is the mother of iron and is a herb for the Kidney and Ming Men. Because of its magnetism, it can attract iron. Ci Zhu Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill) from *Qian Jin Fang* treats upward flaming of dragon fire due to yin deficiency, characterized by roaring tinnitus and dilated pupils due to kidney deficiency. This is because Ci Shi enters the kidney, stabilizes and nourishes true essence, preventing the divine fluid from leaking outward. Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) enters the heart, stabilizes and nourishes heart blood, preventing evil fire from invading the ears and eyes, thus both benefiting from protection. *Ben Jing* treats generalized bi syndrome, wind-dampness, limb joint pain, and cold/sore sensations by utilizing its pungency to unblock bi and disperse pathogens, and its heaviness to remove timidity and stabilize the spirit. Consequently, yin pathogens retreat, limbs and joints become harmonious, ears and eyes become clear, and severe heat and fullness are naturally eliminated. *Ji Sheng Fang* treats kidney deficiency deafness by taking a bean-sized piece of Ci Shi, mixing it with powder of Pangolin Scales (Chuan Shan Jia), wrapping it in silk, inserting it into the ear, and holding a piece of raw iron in the mouth. When a sound like wind and rain is felt in the ear, hearing will be restored.
