[Shennong Bencao Jing, Upper Grade]
[Taste and Nature] Acrid, sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Mainly treats severe wind-pathogenic qi, impotence with inability to erect, strengthens sinews and bones, calms the five Zang organs, tonifies the middle Jiao, enhances willpower, and benefits Qi.
[Verification] It is stated: Bajitian grows in Shu region; currently, it is also produced in Jianghuai and Hedong prefectures, but not as good as that from Shu. It mostly grows inside mountains and forests. The leaves resemble tea leaves and do not wither through winter; they are also similar to Ophiopogonis Radix (Mendong) leaves but thicker and larger, bearing fruit deep in autumn. The root resembles a string of pearls; the perennial root is greenish, while the tender root is purplish-white. Those that are pearl-like and fleshy are superior. Local people harvest the roots and boil them with black soybeans until purple, which greatly destroys their original taste and nature. There is a type of wild root extremely similar to Bajitian, but white in color. Locals boil it with vinegar and mix it into Bajitian, making it indistinguishable. However, if broken open, those that are purple and bright/clean are fake; those that are purplish-greenish-white, mixed with pink powder, and have slightly dull texture are genuine.
My late father said: Herbs and trees, upon reaching winter, all hide according to the Qi transformation of heaven and earth. Only this herb does not wither, standing like a halberd against heaven, thus it should be considered a biological product governed by the Winter Kidney. Its essence relates to Will (Zhi) and Bone, which are both governed by the Kidney. To promote its growth and development, relying on this herb provides great assistance.
[Lei Gong] states: Bearing fruit in late autumn and not withering through winter, it goes against the Earth's Yang killing and Yin hiding, yet obtains Heaven's Yang to generate and grow Yin. Thus, it can be judged to belong to the Liver. Named as "Halberd" (Ji) and having an acrid taste, it can also be judged to belong to the Lung. Indeed, it is a medicine that utilizes the controlling and regulating functions of the Lung and Liver. Therefore, it mainly treats external causes due to Eight Winds of Heaven coming from improper directions, and internal causes due to Five Winds of Meridians touching the Five Zang organs. This may manifest as Liver dysfunction leading to impotence; or loss of bodily vitality leading to weak sinews and bones; or Will declining due to Yin organ deterioration; or Qi damaged due to Yang killing. None of these are not caused by Wind pathogen entering the interior deficiency, requiring the "Halberd" to strike and dispel it. Lei Gong's methods adhere to the appropriateness of controlling transformations. By observing the generation of Lycii Fructus (Gouqi) and Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), this principle becomes self-evident.
(It is called Bajitian [Bajia Heaven] rather than Bajidi [Bajia Earth]. Although this seems like a clever play on words, it actually stems from profound truth. Only in this way can it correspond to the Eight Winds of Heaven, Five Winds of Meridians, defend the Five Positions, and interact with the Five Zang organs.)
