[Shangpin (Superior Category) of the Classic of Materia Medica]
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats blood stasis in the five zang organs, water qi in the abdomen, abdominal distension with lingering heat, bi syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, and various pains in the body. Long-term consumption lightens the body, prolongs life, and prevents aging.
[Verification] It is said: Chongwei Zi grows in the river valleys of Yongzhou and Shangdang regions, and is also found near main roads. Seedlings emerge in spring, growing two to three chi high. The stems are white, resembling mugwort stems but thicker. The leaves are green, similar to chrysanthemum leaves but thinner. Flowers bloom in August, pale yellow; the fruits resemble those of mugwort, containing tiny seeds that propagate easily. It is used as a scion for grafting chrysanthemums. It can withstand frost and snow and belongs to the Artemisia genus. Old leaves can be used for covering, and planting it repels snakes. Jing Shi (Wangbuliuxing) and Yiyi Ren are its guiding or assisting herbs.
Mr. Shaolong Wang stated: The Zhen Yuan (True Primal Qi) connects to the Heart, which stores the qi of blood vessels. The Zhen Yuan is superior to the Lung, facilitating the circulation of Ying and Wei qi and balancing Yin and Yang. That part of the true qi which does not circulate outward is guided by Chongwei Zi to circulate; that part which circulates outward but does not store inward is helped by Palm Leaf (Zonglv Pi) to store.
[Interpretation] It is said: Zhuangzi stated, "Among all waters under heaven, none is greater than the sea; it remains still yet does not overflow because the Weilu acupoint drains the excess." Blood stasis in the five zang organs, water qi in the abdomen, abdominal distension with lingering heat, and bi syndrome due to wind-cold-dampness—all these pathogens remain stagnant in the middle jiao, unable to expand and vent outward. Chongwei Zi enables the qi and blood to expand and vent outward. Only through expansion can the multitude of qi expand; only through venting can the multitude of pathogens vent. This is akin to military encampments: if shelters are improperly covered or concealed, it may反而 (instead) increase stagnation. Because venting follows concealment, the outgoing qi has a root, just as a person moves from a house to a door. Therefore, remaining inside is called "retention" (Liu), and how could there be the character "venting" (Xie)? The emphasis lies on...
[Shangpin (Superior Category) of the Classic of Materia Medica]
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent and sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily brightens the eyes, benefits essence, and eliminates water qi. Long-term consumption lightens the body.
[Verification] It is said: Chongwei is Yimu Cao (Motherwort). The Erya names it Huan and Lv. Liu Xin stated: "Huan refers to an offensive odor." This offensive odor refers to Chongwei. Lu Ji stated: "Lv is Yimu Cao." Yimu Cao is Chongwei. Thus, Zengzi felt inspired upon seeing it. In ancient times, the fruit was used; nowadays, the whole herb is used. Essentially, Chongwei specializes in its fruit, embodying the meaning of abundance and density. Using the whole herb abandons density for sparseness. It grows in coastal pools and marshes; today, it is very abundant in gardens, fields, and damp areas near water. Seedlings emerge in February, resembling young mugwort; by summer, they grow three to four chi high. The stems are quadrangular, like hemp stems. The leaves are pointed and lobed, resembling leaves of Yarrow and Mugwort. The stems have nodes, each producing spike-like inflorescences that cluster around the stem. Between April and May, small flowers bloom on the spikes, red-purple in color, sometimes white. Each calyx contains four tiny seeds, resembling mugwort seeds, blackish-brown in color, with three edges. In pharmacies, they are often sold as Jusheng Zi (Sesamum indicum). Fresh plants have a slight odor; after the Summer Solstice, stems and leaves wither, while roots remain white. Processing methods: lightly stir-fry until fragrant, or steam and sun-dry, then pound and winnow to remove shells and take the kernels. Processed with Fulonggan Earth (Caulis Longan) or sand-fried; white-flowered varieties are preferred.
My late father said: Chongwei grows only during the three months of spring, fully possessing the substance and function of Liver Wood. It is truly a plant of vibrant growth and a precious herb for benefiting mothers.
[Interpretation] It is said: Growing in spring, with dense and flourishing nodes and spikes, and tri-angled fruits, it aligns with the principle of "Heaven generates Three for Wood," obtaining the complete form of Wood and embodying the interactions of the Five Elements, greatly benefiting the Liver and Gallbladder. The name Chongwei implies descending from above and penetrating from within to without, being abundant, beautiful, and sufficient. Why? Because the functions of the eleven zang-fu organs depend on the Jia Gallbladder (Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian). Therefore, it brightens the eyes above, transports water qi below, nourishes essence internally, and consolidates the physical body externally. Regarding "Benefiting Mothers": conception begins in the Jueyin Liver channel, and childbirth extends from the Shaoyang Gallbladder channel. Before and after pregnancy, the Liver and Gallbladder serve as the fundamental basis (referencing the Daoist concept of natural processes). All these efficacies serve to nourish the function of the Liver and soothe the substance of Wood. Through deep exploration and analysis, one naturally understands...
(Note: The parenthetical note in the original text explains: "Conception begins in the Si-Hai period of the Jueyin Liver channel forming the embryo; childbirth extends from the Yin-Shen period of the Shaoyang Gallbladder channel.")
