[Shangpin (Superior Category) of the Classic of Materia Medica]
【Flavor and Nature】Sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
【Indications】Primarily treats dysentery with thick pus and blood; tonifies the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner); repairs severe traumatic injuries such as metal wounds; benefits Qi; prevents hunger; and delays aging.
【Analysis】It is said: Wax is the spleen of the bee (referring to the honeycomb structure). *Piya* states: Its house resembles a spleen, hence it is called "Honey Spleen" (Mibi). Also known as wax bee. Wax is generated from honey. Among all flavors in the world, none are sweeter than honey, and none are more bland than wax. Old theories state that when bees transform honey, they must extract water from pigs (Note: Textual corruption likely here, possibly referring to specific moisture or process), inject it into the wax chamber, and then honey is formed, hence called wax. Wax is the [missing character in original text, contextually implying residue or essence] of honey.
Processing method: After obtaining honey, refine and melt it over gentle fire, filter it into water. The color turns yellow, commonly known as Yellow Wax (Huangla). Further boil it with water, fold good cotton paper into several layers, wet it by dipping in cold water, then press it onto the wax. It adheres immediately upon contact. Retrieve it and dip it back into cold water. When wax condenses on the paper, peel it off. Repeat sucking and peeling until complete. Spread it inside a bamboo tray, expose it to the sun. When dry, frequently sprinkle with water. Over time, the color becomes white like raw silk, thus named White Wax (Baila), distinct from new white wax that turns yellow after long storage. It is not of the same category as wax produced by insects (such as insect wax). It is incompatible with Yuanhua (Radix Genkwa) and Zhen Ge (Concha Tridacnae/Clam shell).
[Missing Author Name] says: Honey implies density/secrecy. Wax implies union/gathering. Wax serves as the honeycomb, uniting density to complete the fermentation/nurturing process. Its flavor is sweet, nature is warm, center position, color is yellow.
It addresses the condition where the Stomach fails to maintain density/secrecy, resulting in dysentery with pus and blood. It further repairs the lack of density/secrecy in metal wounds, promoting the regeneration of muscle texture and skin. This function is governed by the Stomach organ. Benefiting Qi refers to benefiting the Earth element of the Stomach.
(Wax acts as the honey-spleen, assisting hundreds of flowers in transforming into honey. Honey is sweet while wax is bland; this is not favoring one over the other, just as the melon is sweet while the stem is bitter, thereby revealing the distinction between the central pivot and the roots/branches, interior/exterior. The *Monthly Ordinances* determine the Five Elements, formulate the Five Flavors, and assign them to the Five Zang organs. The *Suwen* separately identifies the Bland Flavor as the root of the Five Flavors. For deficiencies in the Form Zang organs, each is supplemented with its corresponding flavor. For conditions of collapse and decline, the Bland flavor is specifically used to sustain them. The *Benjing* judges the flavor as Sweet; this refers to the initial taste on the tongue, where honey flavor remains. Upon chewing, as the honey flavor dissipates, the true flavor emerges. The Bland flavor is never cloying, and its quality endures; this is the reason for not feeling hungry and delaying aging.)
