[Song Kai Bao]
[Aroma and Flavor] Pungent, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats five exhaustions and seven injuries (chronic debilitating conditions), wind-deficiency cold syndromes, damage and degeneration of bone marrow, kidney-cold with seminal emission, and in women, fetal restlessness or miscarriage caused by sinking of blood and qi.
[Analysis] It is stated: Bu Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fructus) is the same as Po Gu Zhi, commonly mispronounced as Po Gu Zhi (Broken Old Paper). It originates from Persia and various prefectures in Lingnan. It is also found in the mountains beyond Lingnan today. The stem is three to four chi high; the leaves are pointed and small, resembling mint; the flower color is slightly purple; the fruit resembles hemp seeds, being round, flat, and black. It is suitable for harvesting in the ninth lunar month.
Processing method: Soak in wine for one night, drain, then soak in flowing water from the east for three days and nights. Steam it from Si hour (9-11 AM) to Shen hour (3-5 PM), then dry in the sun for use.
It is stated: Bone is a part of the physical form, corresponding to the Kidney. Generally, the generation of form must begin with bone marrow, subsequently extending to sinews, vessels/blood, and skin/hair, which are called the "Five Forms"; similarly, the generation of Zang organs must begin with the Kidney transmitting to the Liver, the Liver to the Spleen, the Spleen to the Heart, and the Heart to the Lung, which are called the "Five Zang". The Zang organs store the Spirit (Shen), while the form carries the Qi. The Liver corresponds to sinews; the Spleen corresponds to flesh; vessels/blood correspond to the Heart; skin/hair correspond to the Lung. Correspondence implies that Spirit resides with the Zang, and Qi resides with the form. However, the Kidneys are unique in having two: the left is Water, and the right is the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Ming Men); Water is the source of marrow, and Fire is the root of life. Based on Yin and Yang, their Qi connects through the Five Zang and Five Forms, all communicating with the vitalizing Qi. If this balance is lost, lifespan is shortened and not manifested; this is the root of longevity. Since black color belongs to the Kidney, it should be associated with the left (Water); since pungent and warm flavors belong to Fire, they should lean towards the right (Gate of Vitality Fire). Thus, the two Kidneys interact, driving the essence and Qi of Water and Fire to supplement and benefit the bone marrow. Marrow is the fat of the bone. From the bone marrow, Qi is disseminated into the bones, and Essence is scattered into the Kidneys. In an orderly manner, they flourish and transform into each other. Then, even if the transformation of the Five Zang becomes weak, leading to the separation of the Five Forms and resulting in exhaustion or injury syndromes; or if the transformation of the Five Forms becomes weak, leading to the extinction of the Five Qi and resulting in extreme deficiency or Bi (obstruction) syndromes, they can still be made to flourish in order and transform into each other. This is what is meant by "Bone Qi becomes refined, adhering strictly to the Dao and methods," thereby allowing one to long enjoy their heavenly mandate.
