(宋开宝)
渐而烈,则渐中有顿,顿而圆,则顿中有渐,理应顿悟事以渐消,则么生理会。
【气味】苦温,无毒。
【主治】主破血,止血,补伤折。

春作叶,冬则干黄无花实。根扁而长,略似姜形。《拾遗》呼为猴姜;江右人呼为胡狲姜;

(Song Kai Bao Ben Cao records)
Gradually becoming intense, there is a suddenness within the gradual; suddenly becoming complete, there is a gradualness within the sudden. Theoretically, one should attain sudden enlightenment while the matter dissipates gradually, thereby comprehending the physiological principles of life.
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Mainly treats breaking blood (dispersing blood stasis), stopping bleeding, and tonifying injuries and fractures.
[Verification] It is said: Produced in Qianzhou and Jizhou in Lingnan, it is now found in various prefectures and commanderies along the Huai River, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, and Kui Road. It parasitizes on rocks or trees, mostly growing in shady places. Roots extend into strips, covered with yellow, white, and red hairs, along with short leaves attached to them. Large leaves sprout to form branches. The leaves are long with notches, resembling Cyathulae Radix (Guanzhong); the surface color is greenish-green with cyan-yellow spots; the back color is cyan-white with crimson-purple spots. On each side of every large leaf, there are small leaves branching and interlocking, facing each other in pairs. In spring, leaves grow; in winter, they become dry and yellow without flowers or fruits. The root is flat and long, slightly resembling Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ginger). *Haiyao Bencao* calls it Houjiang (Monkey Ginger); people in Jiangxi call it Husunjiang (Hu Sun Ginger); Rihuazi calls it Shimaojiang (Stone Hair Ginger). All are named so due to similar shapes. When processing the roots, use a copper knife to scrape off the yellow-red hairs, cut finely, moisten with honey, steam for one day and night in a willow wood steamer, then sun-dry. For urgent use, simply bake until dry; steaming is also acceptable.
My late father once said: The bitter flavor enters the bones, and the warm nature warms the bones. Those with fire-nature may fear generating restlessness and vexation (Ao Nu).
[Commentary] It is said: Broken bones can be mended, and its efficacy surpasses Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi). Not only is there a difference in victory and defeat, but also between gradual and sudden approaches; there are also indications and contraindications regarding form and viscera. Psoraleae Fructus is gradual yet intense, whereas Drynariae Rhizoma (Gusuibu) is sudden yet complete. Balanced on both sides, it avoids the fault of being overly峻猛 (harsh and violent). Thus, the warming property returns to the right, which is the root of vital energy (Sheng Qi). Cooperating with the bitter nature to travel through the bones, it extends from the interior to the exterior skin and hair. Skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung. From the exterior to the interior kidneys, when its power arrives, everything becomes lush and flourishing, transforming mutually. Thus, the fatigue of the Five Viscera can be replenished, and the extremes of the Five Forms can be aided. There is no need to worry about the stagnation of Qi and Blood, the difficulty of healing injuries and fractures, nor the withered state of organs suffering from upper heat and lower cold, failing to be replenished and aided.
