Tonifies deficiency and consumptive disorders.
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Chickens belong to Wood in the Five Elements, while those with black bones belong to Water. Having absorbed the essence of both Water and Wood, they can benefit the Liver and Kidneys, clear heat, and tonify deficiency. They treat consumptive disorders (Xulao) and Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome).
Treats dysentery.
Treats Jin Kou Li (dysentery with inability to eat/drink). (Boil to extract juice to benefit the Stomach.) Treats Dai Xia (leukorrhea) and Beng Zhong (metrorrhagia/metrostaxis). These are diseases of the Blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney. (If someone dies suddenly from Gui Ji [ghost strike/acute traumatic shock], use the blood from the comb of a black-boned chicken, drip it into the mouth, and have them swallow it. Then, slit open this chicken and apply it to the epigastrium. Once it cools, discard it by the roadside; this is miraculous.) Those with both flesh and bones black are of superior quality. If the tongue is black, it indicates that both flesh and bones are black. Use female chickens for male patients, and male chickens for female patients.
There is a formula called Wuji Wan (Black-Boned Chicken Pill) in Gynecology.
This refers to pheasants. They tonify Qi and stop dysentery.
Sour and sweet in flavor, slightly cold in nature. They tonify the Middle Jiao and augment strength. They stop diarrhea and dysentery. They treat ant bites. The above are classified as original poultry herbs.
Tonify deficiency and dispel wind.
Salty in flavor, neutral in nature. They augment strength, tonify deficiency and exhaustion, dispel wind, and benefit the Lungs. (The *Mu Tianzi Zhuan* records: "When the Son of Heaven arrived at Jusou, the people of Er Shi offered him the blood of white cranes to drink, which benefits human strength.") Chicken bone. (Roast with suet/butter, then incorporate into tonifying medicines.)
Also known as Tao E You (Goose Fat Wash Oil). Promotes unblocking, aids external application.
Salty in flavor, warm in nature, slippery. Applied topically to carbuncles and swellings. Treats Feng Bi (wind-damp bi-syndrome). Penetrates the meridians, treats deafness. (Li Shizhen said: "Tao E You has a penetrating nature, capable of guiding other drugs into the disease site, extracting toxins; therefore, it can treat various diseases such as deafness, bi-syndrome, swellings, and sores.") Peel off its fat, boil until melted, and skim off the surface. Store it in its own crop to prevent leakage; if stored in other containers, it will permeate and leak. (This demonstrates its ability to penetrate bones and marrow. However, it is only suitable for external application and not for decoctions or pills.)
Sweet in flavor, warm in nature, toxic. It may induce wind and generate sores. Those smoked by fire are particularly toxic. Goose blood cures Ye Ge (dysphagia) and Fan Wei (regurgitation). Goose eggs are sweet and warm. They tonify the Middle and augment Qi. Excessive consumption induces chronic diseases.
This refers to ducks. They tonify Yin.
Sweet in flavor, neutral with a slight salty taste. Enters the Blood aspect of the Lungs and Kidneys. Tonifies Yin and clears heat. Stops coughing and promotes urination. Treats heat dysentery. Transforms deficiency phlegm. There are several varieties of ducks; only those with white feathers, black beaks, and crested heads are considered the supreme medicine for consumptive disorders. White corresponds to Metal of the West; Black corresponds to Water of the North. Therefore, Ge Kejiu treated Lao disease (tuberculosis/consumption) with Bai Feng Gao (White Phoenix Paste). (Li Shizhen said: "For treating water metabolism and promoting urination, Qing Tou Xiong Ya (green-headed male duck) should be used, taking the image of Water generating Wood. For treating consumptive heat and toxicity, Wu Gu Bai Ya (black-boned white duck) should be used, taking the image of Metal and Water being cold and austere.") Older ducks are of better quality. Hot blood resolves poisons from gold, silver, elixir stones, and arsenic. It is also used for those who died from evil qi invasion or drowning. Applied to wounds from earthworm bites. Goose eggs are sweet, cold, and salty. They clear heat from the heart, abdomen, and diaphragm. Excessive consumption damages the body. (Meng Shen said: "Excessive consumption induces cold qi, causing shortness of breath and chest tightness. Children consuming too much may suffer from weak legs. Chen Shiliang said: 'Those with sores and toxins should avoid eating it, as it causes foul flesh to protrude. Do not consume it together with turtle meat, plums, or mulberries.'") Goose head promotes urination and treats edema. Goose brain, when applied topically, is excellent for frostbite.
