Also known as Xunlu Xiang (Frankincense). It has the effects of promoting circulation, invigorating blood, and relaxing sinews.
Bitter and warm in nature. Its pungent and aromatic quality is good at penetrating and moving. It enters the Heart Meridian and circulates through the twelve meridians. It can dispel wind and extend sinews. (For conditions where sinews cannot extend, it should be added to topical applications.) It regulates qi and invigorates blood to relieve pain.
It pushes toxins outwards and protects the heart. (Its fragrance penetrates the wound pores, enabling toxic factors to exit outwardly, preventing them from attacking internally.) It generates flesh and relieves pain. It treats various pains in the heart and abdomen, trismus (lockjaw), deafness, carbuncles, sores, swelling, difficult labor, and fractures/trauma. (These conditions all utilize its ability to invigorate blood and relieve pain.) It also treats mania. (It dispels wind and dissipates stasis. In Shen Cunzhong's *Lingyuan Fang*, Chen Sha San uses 1 liang of Cinnabar, 5 qian each of Frankincense and Sour Jujube Seed, taken with wine until intoxicated, allowed to sleep for one or two days without disturbance; if awakened suddenly, it becomes untreatable. In *Ben Shi Fang*, adding 1 liang of Ginseng creates Ning Zhi Gao.) It stops diarrhea and dysentery. It is contraindicated for carbuncles and sores that have already ulcerated. It should not be applied topically when there is excessive pus. It originates from various foreign lands. Those that are round, large like a nipple, and transparent are considered superior. (Currently, Pine Resin and Maple Resin also exhibit similar appearances, which market vendors sometimes use to counterfeit it.) Its nature is sticky and difficult to grind. Process by water levigation. When using, place the mortar in hot water and grind together with Centella asiatica herb (Jiandixin) to facilitate fine grinding. (*Shan Ju Si Yao* records: for penile pain, equal parts of Frankincense and Scallion White are crushed and applied topically.)
Also known as Moyao (Myrrh). It has the effects of promoting circulation, dissipating stasis, and stabilizing pain.
Bitter and neutral in nature. It enters the twelve meridians, dissipates stagnant qi, unblocks stagnant blood, reduces swelling, and stabilizes pain. (Blood stasis leads to qi congestion; qi congestion leads to fullness and urgency in the meridians, thus causing swelling and pain.) It generates flesh. (Eliminating the old and generating the new, it can produce healthy blood.) It treats injuries from metal weapons, blows from canes, malignant sores, hemorrhoids, and fistulas, as well as eye opacity, dizziness, and red eyes. (Due to stasis-heat in the Liver Meridian.) It treats postpartum blood and qi pain. It breaks mass formations and induces abortion. (Frankincense invigorates blood, while Myrrh dissipates stasis; both can reduce swelling, relieve pain, and generate flesh, so they are often used together.) For various pains not caused by blood stasis but by blood deficiency, such as excessive lochia discharge after childbirth leading to abdominal deficiency pain, and for carbuncles and sores that have already ulcerated, strict prohibition applies according to medical principles. It originates from southern foreign lands. Those that are reddish and resemble amber are considered superior. The processing method is the same as above. (For bone and tendon injuries, stir-fry 4 liang of Rice Flour until yellow, add 0.5 liang each of Myrrh powder and Frankincense powder, mix into a paste with wine, and apply as a plaster.)
